Simple goes a long way in Sungate
When Terri Strecker first became a realtor, the Sungate neighborhood already had a strong reputation in Lawton. “That was the go-to neighborhood with a young couple, because it was on the east side, with good schools and affordable housing,” says Strecker, of Re/Max, who now has almost 20 years of real estate experience. The area has evolved since, but it’s remained a part of town that people like. The late-century homes are well-kept and still accessibly priced, filling a series of winding streets on the quiet, eastern half of Lawton.
Sungate is a small neighborhood located in east Lawton.

Homes of varying ages, but similar profiles
Traveling through sections of Sungate is a trip through multiple decades. The oldest homes, on the south end, were built in the early 1970s. Options get progressively newer toward the neighborhood’s northern end, through the early 2000s. Still, these ranch-style houses share multiple similarities, including floor plans from 1,000 to 1,700 square feet, garage space and brick exteriors. Some of the houses have gotten updates and tweaks over time. “You have a lot of converted garages around here because they’re trying to capture all the square footage,” says Barbara Clark of Barbara Clark Realty, who has 14 years of real estate experience. People still like to own in this area, according to Clark. Prices range between $90,000 and $160,000 and homes sell quickly — after an average of just about two weeks. But the area has attracted so much investment interest that rental properties make up a big percentage of it.
Many of the Sungate homes have paved sidewalk running through the yards.
It is common for Sungate homes to have two car garages.
The Lawton Public Schools system has a B overall grade on Niche. The B-rated Sullivan Village Elementary offers extended care before and after school. Students at the B-plus-rated MacArthur Middle can participate in extracurricular activities ranging from cooking club to running club. MacArthur High has a B grade and offers an Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association academic team and an archery club.
Gore connects residents with the rest of the city
While Sungate itself maintains an almost exclusively residential makeup, its streets connect to the busier Gore Boulevard. The roadway has multiple bus stops in the Lawton Area Transit System, and it also links drivers to Interstate 44. Oklahoma City is just about 90 miles north on I-44. It also takes people into downtown Lawton, a 4-mile trip.
East Side Park is an easily accessible place for recreation
Sungate residents can hop on Gore Boulevard to reach the expansive East Side Park, just about a mile west. This space includes four baseball fields, plus a sizable playground. Those seeking recreation in a smaller setting can stop by MacArthur Park, which is tucked away in the adjacent neighborhood by the same name and has a playground of its own.

Grab a scoop at Braum’s or a margarita at Los Tres Amigos
Gore Boulevard is not only convenient for transportation, but it’s also lined with an assortment of businesses, including multiple restaurants. Los Tres Amigos is one of the popular spots, known in part for its steak fajitas and margaritas. Braum's Ice Cream & Dairy Store is a few doors down from Los Tres Amigos. The regional chain serves ice cream and burgers. Both the Apache Casino Hotel and the Comanche Nation Casino are just off Gore Boulevard. Sunland residents can knock out their grocery shopping nearby, too, thanks to the Homeland just outside the neighborhood on Lee Boulevard.

A rodeo in residents’ backyards
The Lawton Rangers Rodeo is a longstanding tradition in town, one that dates to 1938. The rodeo comes around every August and is held just a couple miles south of Sungate. Some 25,000 people pack into the event each year, over four days. Events range from steer wrestling to bull riding. The Freedom Festival is another major event in town, a two-day Fourth of July celebration at Elmer Thomas Park, complete with two fireworks shows.
