Lexington neighborhood on the upswing
Northside is experiencing a rebirth. This neighborhood bordering downtown Lexington has many cottages and mansion-like properties that are over a century old. While some struggled with blight in the past, a series of renovations have breathed new life into a number of the smaller houses — and some have become Airbnbs for visitors looking to be close to some of Lexington’s most popular attractions. In addition to its historic homes, Northside is close to a trendy dining and shopping scene. During the week, many here can enjoy anything from breakfast and lunch outings in an old Greyhound bus station to bourbon tastings and jazz shows at one of the local watering holes. “It’s up and coming, and it’s been up and coming for years,” says Jamie Bates, the co-owner of Ugly Duckling Antiques. “And a lot of people are coming up with their own shops and opening them up. These kids are coming in and revamping everything.”

Bungalows, creative contemporaries and stately houses
Craftsman bungalows, Victorian cottages and small Cape Cods stand alongside American Foursquares and contemporary-style houses with modern touches like flat roofs and second-floor balconies. Contemporary townhouses and apartment complexes also exist here, and creative builders have used materials like repurposed storage containers to build some of those units. Several of Northside’s largest houses date back to the Civil War and post-Reconstruction eras. Those houses have footprints reaching nearly 10,000 square feet and showcase Greek and Romanesque designs. The smaller cottages can run between $250,000 and $400,000, while the more prominent houses can run between $900,000 and nearly $2 million. Depending on size, the townhouses can also run between $350,000 and $450,000. Some of renovations here have also been due to limits imposed on expansion. “Lexington’s had a moratorium on growth and development for a long time, so all the construction has had to happen in infill and redevelopment,” says Shevawn Akers, a broker with Firefly Realty & Investments.
Rows of four-square-style homes are common in Northside.
Homebuyers looking in Northside can expect to spend around $229 per square foot.

From breakfast at North Lime Coffee & Donuts to craft beers at Blue Stallion
Residents can start their day by walking a few blocks to the Greyline Station, an old Greyhound bus station that's been converted into a market. Patrons at North Lime Coffee & Donuts can order square-shaped doughnuts and even play a few ping pong matches. County Club is a neighborhood barbecue joint, while the Blue Heron Steakhouse serves upscale fare and cocktails. The Blue Stallion Brewing Co. is one of the few brewpubs here. Patrons can enjoy their drinks in the beer garden or from the comfort of leather couches inside the brewpub. The Green Lantern is a late-night hangout and watering hole often featuring live music. The venue’s multi-cultural decor includes a hula doll and East Asian-themed dragon art. Villainous is another popular drinking spot that also offers board games. The bar’s decor includes colorful portraits of Jack Nicholson as The Shining’s Jack Torrance, the T-800 skeleton from the Terminator franchise and Marvel supervillain Doctor Doom. Kroger provides a nearby grocery store.

A horseshoe-themed mural advertises the court. Instead of being on horses, the sport's players compete against each other on bicycles. The North Lexington Family YMCA offers indoor recreation and neighbors the Legacy Trail, a 12-mile path that goes all the way to the Kentucky Horse Park. The historic Lexington Cemetery is also nearby. The cemetery is a vast arboretum with more than 200 tree species, including dogwoods and pink weeping cherries. Visitors can also see thousands of tulips and attractions like the Henry Clay Monument and Mausoleum.
