Countryside
Luxury Countryside homes and relatively affordable condo options
Countryside’s housing consists of various single-family builds, from geometric midcentury modern ranch styles, to early 20th century colonials. Prices often range from $1.5 million to about $4 million, depending on acreage and number of bedrooms. With cars tucked away in private garages or driveways and no sidewalks, the roads are left empty and open for walkers and bikers. Communities will often throw block parties on these streets, where children play games and adults bring out their grills. Additional housing options include two-bedroom townhouses and condos in buildings like Manor Terrace and Emerson Gardens. These units tend to sell between $550,000 and $950,000.Highly rated public and private schools near Countryside
Countryside students are zoned for Lexington Public Schools, which ranks in the top 100 districts in America, according to Niche. Children can begin their education at the A-rated Harrington Elementary School, which underwent a massive reconstruction in 2005. New additions included a centralized gymnasium, auditoriums and larger classroom sizes to accommodate the town’s growing population. After attending Harrington Elementary, students can head to Jonas Clarke Middle and then Lexington High, which both earn A-plus scores. Families that opt for private education have proximity to Lexington Christian Academy, which has an A-plus and enrolls boarding and day students in Grades 6 through 12.A residential area encompassed by conservation land
Countryside offers plenty of land for outdoor recreation, including 120 acres of nature preserve at Whipple Hill. The area has hiking trails and according to Moore, “amazing views of Boston.” Joyce Miller’s Meadow and Shaker Glen are other large spaces with similar amenities. Open only in the summer, the Arlington Reservoir Beach brings the coast to a landlocked town. Here, children can enjoy the playground, swim and play on the sandy shore. The reservoir is also surrounded by land with walking paths, tucked beneath towering red oaks and maples. While these areas bring in many hikers and birdwatchers during the warmer months, snowshoers and cross-country skiers enjoy the trails in the winter, as well. Along with large, public parks, Countryside residents can visit Wright-Locke Farm to volunteer with the animals, pick raspberries or attend barn concerts. Locals can join Sun Valley or Winchester swim and tennis clubs, while golfers have plenty of options within 5 miles, including Belmont or Lexington country clubs.Stores, restaurants and services in Countryside, Arlington and Woburn
While residences and conservation land cover most of Countryside, the intersection of Lowell and Woburn streets serves as the neighborhood’s town center. Shattuck Ace Hardware, a few takeout Indian and pizza spots, salons and a dental office form a few strip malls, adjacent to the small Countryside Green space. This part of the neighborhood also hosts multiple houses of worship, including the Lexington Mosque, the Massachusetts Buddhist Association and various denominations of Christian churches. Most shopping and dining options lie outside of Countryside in Arlington, though the Lexington Community Farm offers fresh, locally sourced produce. About 2 miles south, Massachusetts Avenue features a Trader Joe’s, Walgreens and authentic eateries, like Trattoria Nina and Szechuan’s Dumpling. Residents can also head about 3 miles northeast toward Woburn for a Whole Foods and fine dining at Sogno, which blends regional produce with imported Italian ingredients. Here, guests can find a leather seat at the bar and order from the award-winning wine list or sip a customary Aperol Spritz.Celebrating a variety of interests and honoring Lexington’s history
While Countryside may seem like a sleepy part of town, the community gets together for a variety of events. “Many neighborhoods have small gatherings,” Moore says. “There are numerous town events that cater to folks who like the outdoors as well as the arts, festivals, concerts and more.” A 3-mile drive down Woburn Street leads to the heart of Lexington, where most of the area’s festivities take place. The Lexington Chamber of Commerce holds a summer concert series, while the Munroe Center for the Arts hosts workshops, gallery events and a holiday market. History buffs gather on the battle green for Patriots’ Day in honor of the Battle of Lexington during the American Revolutionary War. The 2025 celebration in April will mark the battle’s 250th anniversary, and participants can run in the 5-mile road race, march in the parade or watch the early morning reenactment. The Bikeway Block Party, held along the Minuteman Bikeway, is another popular event, The festival combines fitness and art by organizing pickup kickball games, bike decorating contests and music and dance performances.Getting around Lexington and into Boston
Commuters in and out of Countryside have plenty of transportation options. Main roads in the neighborhood, like Lowell and Maple streets, have Lexpress bus stops, with routes connecting to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and Lowell Regional Transit Authority systems. The closest commuter rail takes off from the Wedgemere station in Winchester. Drivers can reach Interstate 95 and state routes 2 and 3 within about 3 miles. Roads in the area are well-kept and support various modes of transportation. “There is room for those on bicycles, and the majority of the side streets are also paved and maintained by the town,” Moore says. “There is also ample and timely snow plowing on these streets.” The closest flights take off from Boston Logan International Airport, about 13 miles southeast.
