A quiet residential community surrounded by rivers
Liberty, a small borough in Allegheny County about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh, offers tranquil suburban living along the Youghiogheny River. The borough features attractively priced established homes, with the oldest dating to the turn of the 20th century. The homes occupy spacious lots on truncated streets, providing an extra level of privacy. "It is very, very quiet," says Teresa Countryman, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and lifelong Liberty resident. "Everyone is kind and helpful, and it has a neighborly feel. I refer to it as Mayberry." Residents enjoy the rural recreation provided by the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers, which intersect just a few miles north of the borough. Older students do not have to leave the neighborhood, as a combination middle/senior high school is located in the borough.

Ranch-style homes are common among the neighborhood's eclectic mix
Brick ranch-style homes built between the late 1940s and early 1970s are prominent among the neighborhood’s eclectic mix of housing. The more established homes, some of which date all the way to the turn of the 20th century, feature a variety of architectural styles that include farmhouse, Victorian and Cape Cod. Other styles represented include American Foursquare and Tudor. "It's definitely not a cookie-cutter neighborhood," says Countryman. Prices generally range from the high 10,000s to the high 100,000s. "It's very reasonable to purchase a home here, and it's very desirable" says Countryman. "Homes tend to go very fast when they are on the market. But the people who live here tend to live here their whole lives, so there's not a lot of turnover."

Youth competition is prevalent in the community
Ballfield Park is a small neighborhood green space with a playground and a multi-purpose field. Additional athletic spaces, including those on the South Allegheny Middle/Senior High School campus, provide additional opportunities to stay active. "Recreation here is mostly focused on children's activities," says Countryman. "Baseball and softball are really big, and there's also football, soccer and cheerleading." Proximity to a pair of rivers allows residents to easily fish, launch canoes and kayaks or just an enjoy a relaxing day on the water, as many residents own boats. Outdoor enthusiasts also will enjoy Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, a portion of which starts in the neighborhood. The 450-acre tract features miles of primitive trails along which visitors can explore the landscape’s native flora and fauna while having access to hidden waterfalls and the riverfront. Renziehausen Park just across the Youghiogheny River in McKeesport is a regional center of activity anchored by Lake Emilie. The 200-plus-acre complex also includes an arboretum, a butterfly garden, a history center, a senior center and a bandshell that hosts a popular summer concert series.

Retail and dining found across the river in McKeesport
Retail and dining options are limited. "You need to drive about 20 minutes for shopping, and that's probably the only drawback to Liberty," says Countryman. "But I've been doing it my whole life and you get used to it." There is an Aldi across the river in McKeesport, and nearby Tillie’s Restaurant is a community institution that has been serving up highly rated Italian specialties since 1962.
