Hawley combines old‑home character with central Lincoln convenience

Hawley brings together modern and historic Lincoln, right near the heart of town. The area has many of the oldest existing homes in the city, some built in the late 19th century. They’re all minutes from the ever-evolving University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus and a trendy mix of restaurants and other businesses.

Why renovation grants are a lifeline for Hawley’s homes

Early 1900s architecture is prevalent in Hawley, including Craftsman-style bungalows and American Foursquare designs. The city of Lincoln has incentivized the renovation and preservation of many of these properties through its Hawley Historic Restoration Program, which grants up to $50,000 per home for improvement projects. “The city has started doing more investing to [create] a bigger draw to the area,” says Meranda Wente, a local Realtor at Home Real Estate, who’s been selling homes for about six years.

Apartment complexes, townhomes and detached houses share the same blocks, and over 80% of people rent. When single-family properties hit the market, prices tend to range from the low $100,000s to the upper $200,000s. Townhouses, many of them built in the 2010s, sell from the low $200,000s to the mid-$300,000s. “Hawley is a great example of how urban neighborhoods can improve and thrive by creating a balance between old and new, historic and modern, and single-family and rental properties,” says Matt Kirkland, the owner of The Matt Kirkland Group and Giving Realty, with about 20 years of industry experience.

Public schools and the University of Nebraska are within quick reach

The Lincoln Public Schools system is highly rated, and some on the south end of Hawley are within walking distance of Elliott Elementary School. The music program at Elliott includes choir and instrument instruction, and students can participate in concerts. You and your family aren’t limited to options like Elliott, though — LPS offers flexibility through its magnet programs and open enrollment.

Hawley also offers quick commutes to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for older students. UNL’s City Campus is just about a mile away, close enough to walk or bike for many. The school is the largest in the state with 24,000 students, and is one of Lincoln’s largest employers.

Outdoor spaces with trails, play areas and summer activities

Hawley’s intimate city blocks give way to Trago Park, on the west side of the neighborhood. The 8-acre space has a playground and a basketball court, plus plenty of grassy field space. Trago’s spacious splash pad provides a place for the kids to cool down in the summer. You can also access Lincoln’s Billy Wolff Trail and MoPac Trail West from the park, two paved paths that combine to cover more than 16 miles. The Billy Wolff Trail continues south through Trago Park and into the adjacent Union Plaza, a spot featuring decorative water features and an amphitheater. The annual Hub & Soul Music Concert Series puts on free monthly performances there from June through September.

Walking, biking and transit make daily trips simple

Transportation choices in the Hawley area make it possible to get places without a car. There are bike lanes along P and Q streets, and neighborhood sidewalks make it easy to get around on foot. StarTran bus stops are everywhere, and UNL students can ride for free.

Local eateries and markets give the area a global flavor

The Hub Café is one of the staples of Hawley’s diverse restaurant scene. Located in Union Plaza, The Hub emphasizes ingredients from Lincoln-area farmers in its variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, from French toast to pork belly tacos. “They also host live music and different events there,” Wente says. The schedule includes concerts on Friday nights, open mic nights on the first and third Thursday of every month, and a farmers market held on Wednesday evenings from May through September. Other eateries include:

  • Pho Nguyenn Vietnamese Restaurant, where you can pair a warm bowl with a bubble tea
  • Fattoush Restaurant, which specializes in Middle Eastern fare
  • Rosari’s Kitchen, a Central American spot known for its pupusas
  • Bloom Coffee, where you can grab an espresso for a pick-me-up
The area has a melting pot of grocery stores, too, including Al Mustafa Market, Lobo City Mex Supermarket, Viet Hao Market and Sun Grocery. You can head just a couple of miles east on O Street for more shopping, whether at Target, Super Saver, Hy-Vee or the Gateway Mall.
