Settled to the west of the Hackensack River, Little Ferry is a sedate borough in New Jersey’s Bergen County, less than 10 miles away from northern Manhattan. Along with a few surrounding towns, including South Hackensack, Teterboro and Moonachie, the area is commonly referred to as the Meadowlands, a reference to its wetlands area. “It’s a very small town, with a family-friendly environment where a lot of residents know each other,” says Little Ferry native and broker/owner at RE/MAX Lifestyles, Jennifer Romero. “One of the major pluses is that it’s very easy to commute.”

Family homes, with very limited availability
Single-family and two-family homes with brick and vinyl siding are common throughout the neighborhood. Inventory is generally very low, and some properties may be in need of renovation. A small ranch house might run between $425,000 to $469,000. Larger two-family homes might go for between $870,000 to $1.2 million. A few condos can be found in developments like Evergreen Court, but availability is rare. In general, prices may be lower than in neighborhoods like nearby Hasbrouck Heights, which is directly west, near Teterboro Airport.
Restaurants including Segovia Steakhouse, plus ShopRite nearby
Multiple restaurants and shops can be found off Sylvan Avenue and Liberty Street. Palermo’s Café & Bakery serves wood-oven pizzas, panini and traditional Italian pastries. Ben’s Bagel Barn is known for New York-style bagels and breakfast sandwiches. On Main Street, Segovia Steakhouse & Seafood serves choice cuts and Spanish cuisine. North of Sylvan Avenue, locals can visit Brix City Brewing’s taproom for pizza and live music. Groceries can be found at the ShopRite of Hackensack on River Street and at H Mart on Bergen Turnpike.
Athletic fields at Lakeview Park
Hiking trails can be found at the 28-acre Losen Slote Creek Park, which offers birdwatching throughout the year. A mile north, Lakeview Park has athletic fields, including a baseball diamond, and a playground. “The Lakeview Park is where they have all the sporting events,” Romero says. The park also offers opportunities for fishing.
MetLife Stadium in nearby East Rutherford
Less than four miles south, MetLife Stadium hosts events throughout the year, including international soccer games and massive music tours. During football season, it’s home to the Giants and Jets. In August, Little Ferry hosts National Night Out at the police station, where residents can meet local first responders.
Shifting facilities for Washington School
Since the historic Washington School building, which served elementary school students, closed in 2018, building facilities have been in flux, with first and second graders using the Washington Annex building and other grades using part of Memorial Middle School. Pre-K through fourth graders attend Washington/Memorial Elementary School, which has a B minus rating from Niche. Memorial Middle School serves fifth through eighth grades and also earns a B minus. For seventh through 12th grades, students attend Ridgefield Park Junior-Senior High School, which has a B rating from Niche.
Major highways, including I-95, and express buses to NYC
The neighborhood offers a few transportation options. “Little Ferry has a lot of express bus lines into NYC, with two different routes for NJ Transit,” says Romero. “You have access to Routes 3 and 46, and Route 80 is very close.” Drivers can use Interstate 95 to reach Lower Manhattan, about 12 miles away, and buses depart frequently to Port Authority. Train stations can be found nearby at Teterboro and at Essex, offering connecting routes to Penn Station.
New school buildings and flooding concerns
In 2018 the Washington School building was closed and there are plans to build a brand new Washington Middle School to replace the facility. Area flooding is a concern and flood-resilience projects are being undertaken by the state to improve drainage infrastructure.
