The Meriwether neighborhood lies about 3 miles south of downtown Louisville.
Meriwether is a smaller, more laid-back version of Schnitzelburg
Located just a few miles from downtown Louisville, Meriwether offers a blend of historic character and urban convenience. Often viewed as a quieter counterpart to nearby Schnitzelburg , the neighborhood is known for its early-1900s homes, many featuring classic shotgun layouts and welcoming front porches. Buyers are drawn to the area's established dining scene, proximity to the University of Louisville and access to downtown's jobs and attractions.
Shotgun homes and bungalows with century-old charm
Meriwether is among a group of neighborhoods known for their architectural charm, with most homes dating to the early 1900s. Prices typically range from the low $100,000s to the mid-$300,000s for full-scale renovations. The median sales price in the mid-$200,000s is lower than Schnitzelburg but higher than Shelby Park. Being close to the university is a draw for investors, who can easily rent out properties in the area. Meriwether's rental rate is about 50 percent, which is higher than Schnitzelburg, but lower than Shelby Park. Shotgun-style homes built close together on compact lots are prominent among the housing options, which also feature bungalow-style elements such as large, welcoming porches. “There are a lot of shotgun homes here because the properties used to be taxed based on how wide they were,” says Steve Minor, a Louisville native and Realtor at RE/MAX Properties East.
Welcoming front porches are a common feature in the Meriwether neighborhood.

Easy access to downtown, the university and the airport
The heart of the city is only 3 miles away and easily reachable by car or bus. The University of Louisville is even closer, just a 2-mile drive that takes less than 10 minutes. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is about 4 miles away via nearby Interstate 65.
