Housing varieties around Gorham Street
The residential portions of the neighborhood flank Gorham Street and the cemeteries, with most of the sections sitting in eastern and northwestern Sacred Heart, and options for home buyers vary widely. “In that specific area, you’re going to see a lot of singles, but you’re also going to see multi-family homes and a lot of condos,” Liriano says. “Multi-family homes are the main thing in Sacred Heart.” Single-family homes typically fall between $450,000 and $600,000. Multi-family homes often cost more, usually selling for between $600,000 and $800,000. Condos can be priced between $300,000 and $400,000, while townhouses typically sell for $400,000 to $500,000. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 4 out of 10, on par with the national average.Recreation just across the Concord River
Saint Patrick Cemetery and Edson Cemetery occupy much of central Sacred Heart. The grave of writer famed Beatnik writer and Lowell native Jack Kerouac is a landmark in the latter, and visitors often leave mementos at his tombstone. To the northwest across the Concord River, locals can find several parks. Rogers Fort Hill Park has almost three dozen acres of open areas and woods with multiple pathways, while the adjacent Shedd Park covers nearly 50 acres. Its amenities include numerous baseball fields, tennis courts, a playground, splash pad, track and pavilion. The Concord River serves as the neighborhood’s eastern boundary and flows into the larger Merrimack River, less than 3 miles north. “People go to the Merrimack to go boating, kayaking and fishing,” Liriano says. “In Lowell, there are little docks where people bring their boat, put in and go.”Elementary and middle schools within Sacred Heart
The neighborhood is served by Lowell Public Schools, which earns an overall rating of B-minus from Niche. Kids can start their schooling at John J. Shaughnessy Elementary School, which sits in the middle of the neighborhood and receives a C-plus. B.F. Butler Middle School sits beside Shaughnessy Elementary on Gorham Street and also gets a C-plus, spanning grades five through eight. Lowell High School completes the pipeline and gets a B. Clubs at Lowell High include organizations centered around culinary arts, outdoor adventures and environmental preservation.Fans cheer on UMass Lowell sports
As the season shifts from spring to summer, the Lowell Carnival takes place around the end of May and beginning of June each year. The event runs for over a week and encompasses more than a dozen rides, a bustling midway, food vendors and more. The town also often comes out in droves to back the University of Massachusetts-Lowell’s athletics. “UMass-Lowell has a lot of sporting events,” Liriano says. “A lot of people follow the hockey, basketball and baseball teams, and the town supports those teams a lot. You’ll go to one of those hockey games and it’s like going to see the Bruins. It’s a nice stadium and it’s full of people screaming.” The River Hawks basketball and hockey teams both play at the Tsongas Center, less than 3 miles north of Sacred Heart.Highways heading down to Boston
Interstate 495 and the Lowell Connector are each accessible less than 5 miles from central Sacred Heart on Gorham Street, while Interstate 93 sits about 8 miles east. “The south side connects to Interstate 495, while the north side connects to Interstate 93. You can cross Lowell with Route 3A,” Liriano says. But he also warns that commuters need to factor in additional travel time during rush hour: “Traffic is ridiculous on the Lowell Connector in the morning and afternoon.” The Lowell Regional Transit Authority has bus stops along Gorham Street, and the MBTA has a train stop in Lowell just northwest of the neighborhood. Boston sits about 30 miles southeast.Restaurant variety to the north in central Lowell
Along Gorham Street, diners can stop at the Oasis Grill and Restaurant for Brazilian food, order Colombian dishes at Cafeto Lounge & Restaurant or get classic American menu items at Good Thymes Family Restaurant. However, residents often head north into Lowell proper when seeking dining and entertainment options. “When it comes to nightlife and restaurants, you have to go north to the greater Lowell area,” Liriano says. “They have a variety of nice places on the downtown side. Gary’s Restaurant is really good, and Fuse Bistro and Gifu Teriyaki & Sushi are great places to go. There are a lot of Asian restaurants, like Vietnamese and Cambodian food.” Most of central Lowell’s eateries sit less than 3 miles north of central Sacred Heart. For everyday necessities, though, Sacred Heart residents can shop a little closer to home. On the west side of the neighborhood, the Meadow Brook Center shopping plaza has a Target and Harbor Freight.
