Dearington is a small Lynchburg suburb with a population of just 881, where the neighbors know and care about one another. “I moved here in 2017 for school, but I haven’t left since because the community is just so rich,” says Lillian Morrison, a seven-year Lynchburg resident and La Vida Coffee + Market employee. “This area is like a pleasant surprise. I was hesitant about moving here until I realized I was able to curate a place that really feels like home.” Morrison plans on moving away in the next year and says it will be bittersweet. “I’ve met the best people here,” she says. “Everyone knows everyone, and they’re always trying to uplift one another.” Dearington tends to attract nature lovers with its closeness to the James River and hiking trails. It’s also near downtown Lynchburg, a walkable area with restaurants, shops and the local YMCA. “There’s a familiar feeling in the area, with all the churches and corner stores. Everyone feels connected,” says Jocelyn Espinoza, a former Lynchburg resident who was born and raised in Tinbridge Hill, a neighboring area. “I’ll be walking down the street and people always recognize me and my dad.”

Stroll through Jefferson Park
Jefferson Park is the neighborhood's main green space that has basketball and tennis courts, a playground and a trail for walking and biking. It’s named after Thomas Randolph Jefferson, a prominent figure who resided and passed away in Lynchburg. There’s a community center at the park where events and activities happen, spanning from after-school programs to bridal showers. The James River is just two miles east of the neighborhood and offers a place to canoe, kayak and fish. At the Blackwater Creek Natural Area, people can observe all the different wildlife—like woodpeckers and deer—while they hike, bike, jog, or walk the varying trails. The James River Trail Central Junction is another hiking area close by that stretches 10 miles.

Downtown Lynchburg is within walking distance from Dearington. Here, people can grab a coffee or eat a quick meal and dessert at one of the restaurants like Market at Main. There are also some local shops including RiverView Vinyl and Mosaic Collective, a thrift store. “I love that the owner of Mosaic is very conscious of being ethical when it comes to fashion,” Morrison says. Small businesses thrive in Dearington since there are a lot of younger people who live here, because of the schools nearby, Morrison says. Dearington Baptist Church has a fish fry that is free to the public every year. In May, residents enjoy a mix of cultures with different food, music and a parade of dance performances at the annual International Festival.

1900s Bungalows surrounded by maple trees
Early 1900s Bungalows are the popular home style in Dearington. There are also a few Cape Cods sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. The Plaza is a shopping center that’s home to Val’s Comfort Kitchen, which serves southern dishes. Venue Cinemas, a discount movie theater, and the Lynchburg Public Library are also in The Plaza. F and L Market Grocery Store is where people go for everyday essentials.

Espinoza says the neighborhood is very walkable. People can also get around by hopping on U.S. Route 29 or using the public bus offered by the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company. The Lynchburg Regional Airport is 7 miles away.
