Downtown Lynn features a diverse culinary and cultural scene
Walking through Downtown Lynn is like stepping into an art museum: almost every block is lined with colorful murals, eclectic storefronts and centuries-old architecture preserved alongside the remnants of cobblestone streets. “At the turn of the century, Downtown Lynn was a major shoe manufacturing city – it was an industrial hub,” says Soraya Cacici, a broker/owner at Nest Forward and former Lynn resident. “A lot of these industrial mill buildings have since been turned into loft condominiums.” In the early 2000s, the city launched projects to repurpose older structures for residential and commercial expansion while still preserving their historic character. A major draw of this area is its coastal location: “Downtown Lynn is only about a tenth of a mile from the ocean, which people can easily walk to,” Cacici says. Downtown Lynn’s thriving multicultural population is another draw that has influenced both the vibrant culinary and creative scene.
The Blue Ox is a 5-time winner of “Boston’s Best Burger”
“One of the beautiful things about Downtown Lynn is that there’s such a wide diversity of food and culture,” Cacici says. Area restaurants include Vietnamese diners, Mexican taquerias, Italian eateries and American bistros. One of the city’s most popular dining spots is The Blue Ox. “It’s an establishment that’s been around for a long time. They were known for winning Boston’s Best Burger five years in a row in Boston Magazine – it’s called the sin burger.” There’s also Tacos Lupita, a Salvadoran café specializing in pupusas. “There are people who will drive from other parts of the state to eat at Tacos Lupita,” Cacici says. Downtown Lynn is also home to the Nightshade Noodle Bar, a James Beard-nominated fine dining restaurant offering tasting menus that range from nine to 21 courses. Cacici says locals can also shop for groceries at Gastronome, a small European fresh market that sells primarily Eastern European food items. Groceries can also be found at Stop and Compare in the Lynn Marketplace shopping mall.

Nahant Beach within walking distance of Downtown
Coastal parks and beaches are only a few blocks away from Downtown Lynn and offer a range of outdoor activities. “Once you get to the ocean, you can get to a pedestrian path that connects to Lynn Beach,” Cacici says, adding that this paved seaside walkway is especially popular among runners and cyclists. Lynn Beach connects to Red Rock Park, a grassy coastal park with trees and shaded areas that make it a popular picnicking destination. Right next to Lynn Beach is Nahant Beach, which Cacici says is connected to the island of Nahant via a causeway and is one of the most visited beaches in northern Boston due to its sandy landscape and ideal swimming areas. “There are lots of dunes and natural grass embankments in Nahant Beach,” Cacici says. Downtown Lynn residents can also travel approximately 4 miles farther inland to explore the sprawling Lynn Woods Reservation, which Cacici says is a “2,400-acre state park and protected open space popular for hiking and mountain biking.”

Catch the Newburyport/Rockport Line to Downtown Boston
Downtown Lynn is situated approximately 10 miles north of Boston proper. “The MBTA Commuter Rail runs straight through Downtown Lynn as part of the Newburyport/Rockport line, which travels from Boston’s North Station all the way up to Rockport, an area that has much smaller, very quaint seaside communities,” Cacici says. The MBTA, or Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, also operates bus services in Lynn and has multiple routes with stops in the downtown area. Boston Logan International Airport is just under 9 miles south of the city and serves as a major hub for direct domestic and international flights.
The commuter rail is a popular option for residents of Downtown Lynn to get around.

Historic mill buildings repurposed into modern condominiums
“Downtown Lynn is mostly condominiums, apartments and multifamily housing; since many of the apartment buildings are repurposed mills, there’s a lot of interesting brick and beam architecture in a lot of units,” Cacici says. She says that there are a handful of single-family homes on the outskirts of Downtown in the Diamond District neighborhood, but they often have a higher price point because of their proximity to the ocean: “You see a lot of Tudor and Victorian style homes, many of which were built in the 1800s.” Single-family homes in this area start around $450,000 and climb up to the $900,000 range, with some properties even selling in the millions. Condo units typically cost between $200,000 and $400,000.

Environmental initiatives launched by city and state governments
In recent years, the city has launched several initiatives and made a substantial effort to preserve Lynn’s beloved beaches, of which some swimming areas have been polluted. “Lynn Beach and Swampscott Beach are going through major environmental cleanups – there’s a lot of advocacy and work being done at both the city level and state level,” Cacici says, adding that Nahant Beach remains uncontaminated and a safe swimming area. Downtown Lynn has an overall CAP Index score of 8 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4. Just under 5 miles north of the city is Salem Hospital, a Level II trauma center with a 24-hour emergency department.
