A distinct neighborhood on the Massachusetts coast
To understand the character, traditions and values of Lynn’s Eastern Avenue neighborhood, start by flipping through the catalogue of local businesses registered within the community’s borders. Blue-collar family-owned companies such as Ventura & Sons Construction, Kuhlman Electric, Waldman Plumbing and Garcia Ironworks all invest in the infrastructure of the neighborhood and in the hardworking people who live there. It comes as no surprise, then, that Eastern Avenue has cultivated a reputation among its neighbors. “Eastern Avenue isn’t just a random collection of houses; it’s a true neighborhood,” says Paul Atwood, a local firefighter and real estate salesperson with Return Realty Group. “It has a distinct ‘Main Street’, and locals live in their homes for decades rather than years.” Waves of immigration in the early 20th century have lent the neighborhood an apparent cultural flavor, while the century-old homes lining the streets keep it feeling distinctly like a New England coast town. Nearby public transportation connects Eastern Avenue to destinations like Salem and downtown Boston, but a lack of encroaching highways and the lush natural landscape serve to enhance the small-town atmosphere.

To Boston and Salem from Swampscott Station
Eastern Avenue’s position on the outskirts of Lynn means that the area’s connection with highways like Interstates 95 and 90 is rather limited, with the nearest access point being almost 8 miles away in Peabody. “That part of Lynn is not exactly convenient to the highways,” Atwood says. “But there’s a commuter rail station at Swampscott that heads right to downtown Boston.” It takes roughly 25 minutes to get to TD Garden from Swampscott Station on the Newburyport/Rockport Line, which also connects with the MTBA Silver Line SL3 bus at Chelsea. This is the quickest public route to Logan International Airport, though driving the 11-mile distance is generally faster when traffic is light. Heading north, the Newburyport/Rockport Line makes the trip to Salem in around 7 minutes.

The Italian heritage of Lynn displayed along Essex Street
Eastern Avenue was a popular landing spot for Italian immigrants in the early 20th century, and that influence remains evident throughout the community. The Sons and Daughters of Italy’s Santa Famiglia Lodge sponsors local scholarship funds by hosting bingo nights, banquets and pancake breakfasts out of the basement of Holy Family Catholic Church on Bessom Street, often accompanied by catered menus of fresh pasta, meatballs, eggplant and Italian desserts from local business Durum Pasta and Provisions just up the street. Neighborhood restaurants are predominantly Italian, including the Trattoria-style Antique Table and the more contemporary Monte’s Restaurant. “Monte’s is kind of an icon,” Atwoods says. “Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports is from Swampscott just down the road. In his One Bite Pizza Reviews, Monte’s is the only one that scored a 10 out of 10.” Grocery shopping is easy on Essex Street, the unofficial Main Street of the neighborhood. During the morning commute, Nina’s Market packs with locals stopping in for coffee and a deli sandwich before work. Alnour Market sells halal meat and dairy products, while fresh produce and pantry staples can be found at Merengue Market two blocks farther. Two miles east, around Swampscott Mall, there is a Whole Foods and a Stop and Shop. The closest Target is just about 3 miles north on the outskirts of Salem.

Green space from Nahant Bay to the Lynn Woods Reservation
The Clark Street Playground, known locally as Clark Park, is a favorite of children and seniors alike. It features a small playground, a baseball diamond and a full-length bocce court. The Lynn Woods Reservation, founded in 1881, is located just 4 miles from Eastern Avenue and is the second-largest municipal park in the United States by acreage. Joggers and mountain bikers enjoy exploring the trails around the Stone Tower observation deck and Walden Pond, the wood’s largest reservoir. And during the summer, tourists and locals flock to King’s Beach at the end of the road to relax beneath umbrellas or learn to surf the rolling waves of Nahant Bay.

Colonials and bungalows between Marblehead and Lynn
The Eastern Avenue neighborhood, located on the eastern edge of Lynn, is sandwiched between the country and yacht clubs of Marblehead to the north and the multifamily homes and corner taverns of Central Lynn to the south. Houses sit close to the streets, allowing residents to admire the Boston ferns and seasonal decorations adorning their neighbors’ front porches as they take their dogs for brisk morning walks. Most homes in the neighborhood are two-story colonials, although freshly painted siding, gable dormer windows and large front porches ensure that no two homes look exactly alike. Hundred-year-old Dutch Gambrel Colonials sit side-by-side with American Foursquares and bungalow-style homes with Arts and Crafts architectural highlights. Many of the larger three-story colonials have been remodeled to feature multiple kitchens and side entrances, accommodating multiple residences in single buildings and creating investment and rental opportunities. The housing market is competitive, with most homes selling less than a week after listing. Prices range from $475,000 to $850,000.

Sports in Boston, Halloween in Salem
Festivals take place just a few blocks from Eastern Avenue in downtown Lynn year-round, including the annual Lynnside Out Festival, which is held in September and features live music and rows of food vendors. Bruins and Celtics games at TD Garden are a short train ride south from Swampscott Station, though folks may find themselves headed 5 miles north to Salem when the leaves begin to change. Witch City, as it is affectionately referred to by locals, hosts events all autumn long, including craft beer festivals at Salem Common and the Hallowed Harvest Jack-o-Lantern Festival, just one of many concurrent events that mark the largest Halloween celebration in the world.
