InTown is close to parks, restaurants and Mercer University
Ask any Maconite where the city’s most beautiful homes are located, and they’ll likely point to InTown, the oldest residential neighborhood in the Central City. Colorful historic homes date back to the 19th century and are within walking and biking distance of parks and Mercer University School of Law. Some of Macon’s most prominent citizens lived in the neighborhood and commissioned local architects like Ellamae Ellis League and Neel Reid to construct opulent homes from the 1830s through the early 1900s. Residents are also a short drive from restaurants, houses of worship and downtown Macon.
The InTown neighborhood still has several historic, brick covered streets with lush green foliage.

Glamorous historic homes built by Macon architects
InTown is known for its romantic architecture in every color of the rainbow. The streets are saturated with ornate Victorian, Italianate, American foursquare and revival-style homes, and College Hill has a dense collection of sprawling estates. Many of the area’s largest homes have been retrofitted into multi-family dwellings. “A lot of them are rented, actually,” says Lance Waller, a lifelong Macon resident and Realtor with Fickling & Company. “There are a lot of condos because the homes are so big, so they’ve split off those homes into different units.”Fixer-uppers cost between $60,000 and $175,000, while single- and multi-family homes range from $200,000 to $375,000. Elegant homes with more than 3,000 square feet cost between $400,000 and $600,000. Individual condo units in a transformed home can range from $200,000 to $450,000. Grand, historic mansions rarely hit the market, but when they do, they often cost between $800,000 and $1.5 million.

Restaurants and breweries within a mile or two of most homes
Another InTown perk is its proximity to restaurants and the downtown area. Yollah is a self-described farm-to-table social kitchen and garden with a rotating menu of seasonal specials. The Bear’s Den serves cafeteria-style country cooking like fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Another nearby restaurant is The Brick, an appropriately named spot for brick oven pizza and calzones. Downtown has restaurants like Rookery, Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen, and H&H, the iconic restaurant beloved by the Allman Brothers Band during their tenure in Macon. Gourmet goods are available at Village Marketplace in Ingleside, but the closest full-service grocery stores are Family Supermarket, 4 miles away, and The Fresh Market, 5 miles away. More grocery stores and retail shops are concentrated on Macon’s west end off of Eisenhower Parkway and Presidential Parkway, 6 miles away.
Residents in the InTown neighborhood can enjoy a farm to table dining experience at the Yollah restaurant.

Residents walk and bike to nearby parks
Some of Macon’s best parks are within walking and biking distance of the neighborhood. Students at Mercer University head to Tattnall Square Park between classes to read under the gazebo and walk on the paved paths that wind through the park. Pups run and exercise at the nearby leash-free Macon Dog Park. Coleman Hill has open green space for picnics and watching the sunset with views of downtown. Washington Park’s serene environment invites visitors to relax on a bench and enjoy the sound of gentle water features. “It’s right across the street, and a lot of people go there to take pictures,” Waller says. Several notable homes have been transformed into museums, including the Hay House, a 19th-century Italian Renaissance Revival mansion dubbed the “Palace of the South.” Built in 1859, it was home to three prominent Macon families: the Johnstons, the Feltons and the Hays.

Neighborhood events and the International Cherry Blossom Festival
InTown has an active neighborhood association that hosts events throughout the year, including porch parties in the summer and an annual Christmas party. The annual Magnolia Soap Box Derby is held at Washington Park on the second Saturday of April and invites students and community members to create soap box cars and go head-to-head in a competition of speed and science. Macon's International Cherry Blossom Festival is in March. The three-day celebration welcomes spring with a symphony of pink petals from 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees.
Close to Interstate 75 and other major highways
Residents have access to major highways like Interstates 16, 75 and 475. Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority bus stops are scattered throughout the area, but many folks drive, bike or walk on the city’s sidewalks to get around town. Medical care is available at Atrium Navicent Medical Center, about a mile away, or Piedmont Macon North, about 4 miles away. Some of the most architecturally significant structures include St. Joseph Catholic Church, a stunning Gothic cathedral, and First Presbyterian Church, a stoic example of Romanesque revival architecture.
