Lake View Hill
Suburban Neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin
Dane County 53704
This tree-covered community has midcentury homes
Lake View Hill’s houses were mainly built in the mid-1900s and reflect popular housing styles of the period: Cape Cod and ranch-style homes are particularly popular here. There are some Craftsman designs and bungalows also scattered around the community. Home prices range from about $160,000 to $460,000. On the lower end of the scale are often some townhouses and dwellings in need of renovation, while larger, mid-century constructions can go for price points in the mid-$400,000 range. Properties typically sit on spacious, wooded yards that add to the tranquility of this community. Tall trees establish a shady canopy over the streets, which don’t typically have sidewalks but are wide enough for walking, driving and parking alike. Because of the neighborhood’s hills and slopes, some residences have basement garages.Lake View Hill Park is the neighborhood's namesake
The 27-acre Lake View Hill Park serves as the neighborhood’s recreational centerpiece. Lake-filled views greet those who journey up the hill— one of the highest points in the city— and on snowy winter days, sledders race their friends down the steep slopes. “Lake View Hill Park is one of the more unique parks in our system,” says Dane County Parks Director Joleen Stinson. She says the property “also has a significant cultural, historical component.” The park is home to the former Lake View Sanatorium, admired by thrill-seekers who believe the grounds are haunted. Maziarka says people spend time outside at the nearby Cherokee Marsh State Natural Area, which spans over 240 acres and features wooded hiking trails where birdwatchers look for vibrant indigo buntings and ponds popular for fishing. Other nearby recreational options include the public Bridges Golf Course and Warner Park, where locals turn out in droves every summer to watch the Madison Mallards play baseball.Madison Metropolitan School District is one of the largest in Wisconsin
Children can enroll in the Madison Metropolitan School District, one of the largest districts in the state. The elementary school they attend depends on their addresses, but one option is Lake View Elementary School, graded C-plus by Niche. It's known for its array of outdoor offerings, including a garden. Students can continue to C-plus-graded Black Hawk Middle School, which emphasizes a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) outlook. Students can finish up their schooling at B-plus-rated East High School. The school features Dual Language Immersion (DLI) courses in Spanish and English and offers electives including graphic design and accounting. For post-secondary education, Madison College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are less than 6 miles away.Downtown, major employers and more are close to home
Lake View Hill is around 6 miles from the heart of Madison and is easily accessible via Sherman Ave, which provides easy access to some of the county’s largest employers, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW Health. The community is just a 2-mile drive via Lake View Avenue from the Dane County Regional Airport. Residents can sometimes hear planes, but most of the area still receives active Sound Scores instead of busy ones. Though most people in Lake View Hill drive to get around, they can also take advantage of the Metro.Beef Butter BBQ and Northside Farmers’ Market offer great dining
Nearby shopping malls, like the Northside Town Center, give residents easy access to chain and local eateries. The award-winning, Texas-inspired Beef Butter BBQ is best known for its mouth-watering brisket, but side options like jalapeno cornbread have also proven to be favorites. The center is especially busy on Sunday mornings from May through October during the Northside Farmers' Market. For year-round pantry staples or produce during the market’s off-season, the neighborhood’s local grocery store, Willy Street Co-op, offers a wider selection of goods.Maziarka recommends a nearby restaurant called Jiffy Lube. While it shares a name with the automotive chain, this spot is known for coffee, donuts and crispy chicken sandwiches instead of tire changes. “It's a fun place to meet friends, hang out and get whichever one of those things you're hungry for,” says Maziarka.
