Anchored centrally by a green space of the same name, Lerdahl Park is one of Madison’s waterfront neighborhoods. A crescent of homes and their private docks hug a tiny sliver of Lake Mendota, while a handful of residential streets wind between the water and Troy Drive, a neighborhood thoroughfare. Lerdahl Park is true to its namesake, showcasing a trio of recreational activities. “There are some really nice parks right on the lake,” says owner and broker Liz Lauer of Lauer Realty Group. “You don’t often get a beach on a lake, but you do with Warner Park here.” Lerdahl Park rests at the center, with Warner Park Beach a short walk southeast along the shore and Governor’s Island in the opposite direction. Recreation, quality housing and a waterfront lifestyle make Lerdahl Park an intriguing neighborhood. “It’s just lake vibes over there; it has a nice northeast side location,” says Broker Aaron Weber of First Weber Realtors – Middleton.
One of the biggest draws of Lerdahl Park is its proximity to Lake Mendota.
Kayaking is one of the most popular pastimes for Lerdahl Park residents.

A suburban feel with a Lake in the mix
The community’s narrow, winding streets feature sidewalks on both sides, making it easily walkable. The many cul-de-sacs combined with shade trees provide a sense of quiet privacy. There is plenty of greenery as the homes feature sizable front and back lawns, and many have gardens with flowers that bloom in the summer. Driveways and garages are typical, so minimal cars hardly ever get in the way along the curb. While close to the University of Wisconsin campus, a college vibe is missing. “It has a really suburban feel,” says Lauer. “You won’t see college kids moving this far north.” Three-bedroom ranch-style homes typically range in price between $340,000 and $385,000. Three-bedroom Dutch Colonials and five-bedroom craftsman builds are in the $550,000 ballpark, while larger, more modern lakeview homes net over $1.5 million.
Lerdahl Park is less than fifteen minutes to downtown Madison.

Taking a dip in Mendota
Locals love to get outside in Lerdahl, and there’s no shortage of ways to spend time in the sun. Warner Park features a sand beach perfect for laying out in the summer. Those who want to get out on the water can rent a boat or kayak on the sandy shores. Shallower spots are for swimming and picnic areas are perfect for lakeside lunches. “The lake is very accessible, and it’s a very active area,” says Weber. Pups can get their exercise, too, as the park has off-leash areas. Its proximity to Lake Mendota makes Lerdahl a great place to break out the fishing pole. The Troy Community Gardens is an area where locals can grow their own food, providing a fun and engaging environment for people of all ages. Lerdahl Community Park offers open green space and outdoor basketball hoops, which are perfect for a quick pick-up game.

The eatery has beach volleyball courts out back, with summer leagues on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In between matches, customers refresh themselves with a beer and a burger. Kingdom Restaurant serves African fare such as benachin, a traditional mild stew with vegetables, rice, and fish or chicken, alongside breakfast classics like a steak and two egg breakfast. Beef Butter BBQ is taking a new approach to smoked meats. Visitors can try crispy baby back ribs, French fries, or loaded mac and cheese brisket dishes. “Mariner’s Cove is a nice restaurant just north of there,” says Weber. This upscale spot has been serving up quality cuts since 1966, making for a lovely evening out. There are also plenty of retail and grocery options nearby. The Willy Street Co-Op has all the fresh produce, supplements and baked goods locals could ask for. National chains Pick n Save off Highway 113, and Hy-Vee off Highway 151 are convenient stops. The East Towne Mall is an excellent spot for shoppers to spend an afternoon perusing brand-name outlets.
