Fresh air, farmland and mountain views define Mahoning Township
Resting in a valley of the Pocono Mountains, Mahoning Township is where country living comes with mountain views. This Carbon County enclave is primarily forest and farmland with a network of creeks running through. “Mahoning is so laid back. Living is slow. It’s not fast-paced and hectic, and the air is fresh,” says Aggie Schoenberger, a Lehigh Valley area native and the Owner of Castle Gate Realty. “I’ve lived in Germany, Alabama, Texas and Reading, but there’s no place like Carbon County.” Along with a slower pace of life, Mahoning Township offers land for sale and is within reach of popular regional parks. The community is home to a stock car racetrack, one of the largest drive-in movie screens in the nation, a small airport and a hospital.

Farmhouses, ranch-style homes and new construction on spacious lots
Most of Mahoning Township’s single-family homes sit along two-lane roads lined with pastures. Ranch-style homes and farmhouses are most common, but buyers can find custom options and new construction, too. Acreage and scenery are big selling points, with lots typically well over an acre and often having views of nearby mountains. The median price for a single-family home is around $440,000, slightly above the national median, but prices can start under $200,000 and exceed $600,000. Houses typically have private wells and septic systems, and residents near Mahoning Valley Speedway and Jake Arner Memorial Airport can hear noise from racing events and aircraft. According to FEMA flood maps, some properties have a flood risk because of the creeks that run throughout the township.

Outdoor adventures in Lehigh Valley, from trails to beaches
Surrounded by mountains and lakes, Mahoning Township is home to many who love the outdoors. “You enjoy all the seasons here,” Schoenberger says. North of the township, Mauch Chunk Lake Park is popular in the summertime, with a sandy beach, boat rentals and campsites. The park has an access point for the Switchback Railroad Trail, which extends more than 12 miles through dense forest. The Appalachian Trail lines Blue Mountain to the south and has scenic overlooks that attract hikers no matter the time of year. The Lehigh River passes through the mountain and is a destination for white water rafting and tubing. While Mahoning doesn’t have any parks, several are nearby in Lehighton, such as Baer Memorial Park, which has a public pool, basketball courts and a soccer field.

Watching stock races and going to the drive-in are popular pastimes
The sounds of revving engines and cheering fans spill from Mahoning Valley Speedway most weekends from March through October. The quarter-mile circular racetrack dates to the 1950s, but back then, the track was dirt, and there were no grandstands. Today the speedway hosts late-model, stock and modified car races that draw spectators from as far as New England. Less than two miles from the racetrack is the Mahoning Drive-in Theater. In operation since 1949, the drive-in is all about nostalgia. It screens cult and classic 35mm films that can be heard by tuning radios to 89.3 FM. Along with having a retro snack bar adorned with movie memorabilia, the drive-in lets moviegoers tour the projection booth and stay on the property overnight. The theater has enough room to accommodate 1,000 cars.

Country roads lead to highways like Interstate 476
The rural character of Mahoning Township makes it a car-dependent community. However, Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority buses make several stops within the township at places like Lehigh Valley Hospital – Carbon and Carbon Plaza Mall. Blakeslee Boulevard Drive East is the main road through the community and connects commuters to highways like Interstate 476. Private planes and medical helicopters take off at Jake Arner Memorial Airport in Mahoning, but commercial flights are about 26 miles away at Lehigh Valley International Airport outside Allentown.
