Manor Township is a quiet, school- and sports-oriented community with older single-family homes northeast of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1849, the township is home to about 4,000 residents who enjoy outdoor activities like hunting and fishing at nearby Crooked Creek Park and State Game Lands Number 247. Manor Township once nursed a healthy rivalry between its two high schools, but now, all students attend one high school, and the community is more united than ever. “There’s a lot of pride in the community and in the high school sports teams,” says Realtor Sandy Bracken with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “Football, baseball, softball – the community supports and backs all that.”

Neighborhood homes and acreage properties
The township has a mix of homes in neighborhoods and acreage properties, with ranch-style and American Foursquare homes being common. Prices generally range from $20,000 to $300,000. The area doesn’t have much new construction, which Bracken says is because of the county’s high property taxes. “The taxes kill that in Armstrong County,” she says. “Say you have a double-wide mobile home on an acre. You could look at $4,000 or $5,000 in taxes a year. If you build a nice, big, two-story home, you’d probably look at $10,000 or $12,000 here. There was some new construction, but it’s kind of at a standstill because of the taxes.”

Sports and technical programs in Armstrong School District
Armstrong School District gets a C-plus grade from Niche, as do its schools, Lenape Elementary and Armstrong Junior-Senior High School. High school juniors and seniors have the option to attend Lenape Technical School full-time. The campus offers 16 technical programs, including cosmetology, culinary arts and welding technology.

A riverside park, hunting grounds and Kittanning Country Club
Fort Run Community Park sits along the Allegheny River and has a picnic pavilion, a basketball court, a baseball field and access to the Allegheny Trail for walking, jogging and biking. Six miles away, the more than 450-acre State Game Lands Number 247 is popular for hiking, hunting, birdwatching and photography. Seven miles south, Crooked Creek Park surrounds a lake and has hiking trails, fishing areas, disc golf and a horse park. Also 7 miles away, Kittanning Country Club is a more than 100-year-old private club with a clubhouse and golf course.

Local restaurants, Hankey’s Riverside and fast food
For over 70 years, Cadet Restaurant has been a popular dining spot with poor boy sandwiches, a 30-foot cowboy statue and car cruises with live music outside the restaurant. Nite Courts is a local restaurant and bar serving American fare and pizza and playing sports on the TVs. Hankey’s Riverside is a local grocery store with a bakery and deli. Fast-food options include Dairy Queen, Subway and Sheetz.
