A Markham City suburb offering short walks to sprawling green spaces and an active community
Expansive open green spaces and a know-your-neighbor feel comprise the community of Country Aire. Home to two of Illinois' five Indian Boundary Prairies, recognized as National Natural Landmarks, residents are within walking distance of Illinois' prairie origins. The community also gathers multiple times a year at Markham City, including its well-known haunted house during the Halloween season. As Chicago's southern suburbs continue to develop, Country Aire remains full of familiar faces. "One thing that stands out is that it's one big family," says Michael Taylor, former Markham City spokesman. "Everyone knows everyone and is willing to lend a hand."
The population in Markham was 11,661 according to the 2020 census report.

The wildlife of Sundrop Prairie and Paintbrush Prairie Nature Preserves
Sundrop Prairie Nature Preserve and Paintbrush Prairie Nature Preserve comprise the larger Indian Boundary Prairies of Illinois. Of the two, Paintbrush Prairie is open to the public, offering springtime walks along sprawling fields of high grasses. Visitors can watch pollinators hover over native flowers or spot one of the 97 different recorded bid species living in and around the preserve. Meanwhile, Country Aire Park, situated in the center of the community, and Commissioner Park on Richmond Avenue offer traditional park experiences with playsets and open space for running.

The ranch-style homes of Country Aire
Mature trees line the community's residential streets, where some feature at least one mulberry or silver maple. These trees make up most of the landscaping throughout, sharing space with shrubbery framing the front of homes. The majority of the community is absent of sidewalks. However, "no parking" signs are spread throughout to keep cars off the street, leaving room for morning strolls and afternoon bike rides. Mid-20th-century ranch-style homes make up most of the housing market, except for an occasional split-level style. Depending on size and condition, potential homebuyers can expect a price range from $60,000 to $260,000.

The convenience of I-294 and other nearby throughways
The addition of the Markham Amazon Fulfillment Center in 2021 welcomed 3,000 jobs to the area. "It's growing, and many people living in the Country Aire subdivision work about one to two miles away," Taylor says. For those working farther north, Interstate 57, which borders its eastern side, provides 23-mile trips north to downtown Chicago. Commuters can also hop on the red line at Midlothian Station for a 40-minute ride into the city. Similarly, Interstate 294 directly northeast offers 36-mile drives north to Chicago O'Hare International Airport. UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial is closer to home, 4 miles east along West 159th Street. For trips to neighboring areas to the east and west, Interstate 80 and State Route 6 also sit within 5 miles of the neighborhood.

Outdoor Italian eats at Bartolini's Restaurant
The Original Hog Wild on Pulaski Road is a local favorite for barbecue, known for its pork tenderloin and cozy wood-clad interior. A half-mile north sits the patio of Bartolini's Restaurant on 147th Street, an Italian spot that serves Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, which many online refer to as the best in the area. When it's time to get some shopping done, a Walmart Supercenter sits 2 miles south, off 167th Street, with an Aldi for groceries across the street.

Getting to and from Central Park Elementary School and Bremen High School
Considering the dense placement of its schools, Midlothian Districts 143 and 228 do not provide bus services for students. However, families can sign up and pay a fee for a first-come, first-served bus, which offers pick-ups at specific stops. As a result, most prekindergarten through 8th grade students walk to Central Park Elementary School, which maintains a C-minus on Niche. Older students attend Bremen High School, which holds a B-minus rating. The high school is home to Echo News. This student-reported online newsletter covers topics from news and entertainment to sports and opinion pieces.
