Outdoor recreation thrives in Martic Township
Along the Susquehanna River, Martic Township is one of Lancaster County’s most picturesque communities. The rural township lies south of the city of Lancaster and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Jason Burkholder, a lifelong Lancaster County resident and an associate broker with Hometown Property Sales, says the area is packed with trails, parks and scenic vistas. “The attraction is the nature,” he says. “When you look at the northern half of the county, it’s farm fields and suburbs. Once you get to the southern end, it’s gorgeous trees, hills, water views and preserves.”
Adventures on the Susquehanna River and trails with scenic overlooks
Kayakers and boaters head out on the Susquehanna River from the Pequea Boat Launch. Several forested parks line the riverbank. That includes Kellys Run Nature Preserve, where the Conestoga Trail leads to the Pinnacle Overlook, a resting spot with picturesque views of the river valley and wildlife. “On a good day, you can see eagles,” Burkholder says. The trail also connects to the Wind Cave, which is known to be the largest tectonic cave in the Eastern U.S. and potentially the country. However, many online guides advise caution. “Last year, they had to chisel part of a rock to get a guy out,” Burkholder says. “It’s a cool place, but they have to rescue people on a regular basis.” The township is also home to Muddy Run Park, which features a splash pad, playground and disc golf course by the Muddy Run Reservoir.
Rural properties offer space, privacy and scenic surroundings
Some homes are along backroads in the wooded hills or surrounded by farmland. There are also several small subdivisions dispersed throughout the rural community. More than half of the township’s homes sit on an acre or more of land. Small one and two-bedroom houses sell for around $110,000 to $130,000. Ranch-style, split-level and Colonial Revival houses range from $230,000 to $600,000. In recent years, three homes sold between $1 million and $1.6 million. They included an A-frame log cabin on 14 acres, an upscale New Traditional home with five bedrooms and a three-car garage and a 40-acre farm with a house from the late 1800s. On average, homes stay on the market for about a month compared to the national average of 53 days. The township also receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Penn Manor High offers free college courses at Millersville University
Students attend Martic Elementary School, which receives a B grade from Niche, followed by A-minus-graded Marticville Middle School. Both schools are in the township. However, Penn Manor High School, graded a B-plus, is about 8 to 20 miles away in Millersville, depending on where students live in the township. The high school’s early and dual enrollment programs allow qualifying students to take free college courses at Millersville University, known by locals as “The Ville.” The university offers over 100 degree programs and competes in NCAA Division II sports.
Limited shopping and dining with more options 10 miles away
Stores and restaurants are few and far between, but a few small businesses can be found scattered around the township’s countryside. The Rawlinsville Brickhouse serves American comfort food and features a bar, as well as a string-lit covered patio. Frogtown Café offers more of a dive-bar setting with a pool table and occasional live music. Old Barn Creamery & Bakery offers homemade ice cream, milk and baked goods and features an outdoor seating area with scenic farm views. Shoppers typically drive 10 miles to big-box retailers in Quarryville and communities closer to Lancaster, like Willow Street, both of which have Giant grocery stores.
Commutes to Lancaster take 15 to 30 minutes
It's about an 8- to 20-mile drive to Lancaster. The commute through farmland typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes. It takes approximately an hour to drive to Harrisburg International Airport, about 40 miles away. Philadelphia International Airport is about 65 miles away, which is about a 90-minute drive.
