The seclusion of Mattydale
Mattydale found its humble beginnings on a farm and has since developed into what it is today. The farming community slowly became a commerce area, which saw growth as Syracuse developed. L. Frank Baum, the author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" lived in this small-town hidden gem surrounded by pockets of forests, and it may have inspired some of his writings. It is a community that thrives on its sense of quaintness while still offering plentiful opportunities to explore right nearby.
Residential streets and surrounding forests
The neat front yards of Mattydale line the grid-like residential streets that break off from the neighborhood's main roads, Brewerton and East Molloy. Found throughout are ranch, Cape Cod and occasional Foursquare-style homes constructed throughout the 20th century, paired with mature oak trees in front and back yards. Unlike many of the surrounding neighborhoods, most of Mattydale is enclosed by small areas of lush forests, providing residents with a feel of seclusion and views of tall trees that sit along the horizon. Those looking to move to the community can expect more affordable home prices than those to the south in Syracuse, ranging from $90,000 for a two-bedroom home to $218,000 for a recently renovated three-bedroom house.

Christmas on the lake
Mattydale is also home to several regularly occurring local events. “Lights on the Lake is a big deal to the community,” says Romano. The show takes place along Onondaga Lake and is a two-mile drive-thru light show that syncs up to music on a local radio station. Guests get to experience the Land of Oz, which pays homage to L. Frank Baum, a twinkling fantasy forest and a grand finale at the end. The End of Summer Jam is a local event where neighbors can gather to enjoy live music and classic cookout food.

Days on Onondaga Lake
Onondaga Lake hosts visitors throughout the year at Onondaga Lake Park, a 5-mile drive southwest of the neighborhood. The park is home to paved trails for walking and spotting migratory birds, docks for boating and fishing, and scenic views of the lake. Closer to home is Burnham Park, which has two playgrounds and hosts crowded baseball games during the warmer months.

Those commuting into Syracuse for work, city attractions or classes at Syracuse University do so via a quick 6.8-mile trip into downtown along I-81 South. The same route carries residents to Upstate Health Care Center, the nearest hospital to the neighborhood. New community center
A $6 million community center is coming to Mattydale. There will be areas for senior citizens to come together, a spot for students to work, and a 300-person space for future events and gatherings. The park outside will be used for town concerts and movie nights, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2024.
