Serene community surrounded by wetlands

Maurice River Township in Cumberland County has kept its rural, old-town charm since the first residents settled in the mid-1600s. While many people who grow up in the township stay, more from outside the area are also looking to settle here. “What I find is, homes in Cape May County are overpriced, especially for first-time homebuyers. So, they come over here for more affordable prices and commute to work in Cape May,” says Jennie Dermott, a sales associate with Cape May County Real Estate Broker LLC and a local resident. “Maurice River Township is an old-style town that you don’t really see anymore. It’s a quiet area.” Originally an oyster community, the township now holds miles of nature preserves, wetlands, small homes and memories of the past, like the second-oldest lighthouse in New Jersey.

Cape Cods and colonials with history

Stretches of trees and undeveloped land surround pockets of homes with simple National, Cape Cod and colonial designs. “Some of the houses have recent remodeling, but many have their original structures,” Dermott says. Renovated three-bedroom homes can go for $225,000 to almost $400,000. Smaller homes built in the late 1800s to early 1900s often sell for $175,000 to $225,000. Most homes have wide-open lots with plenty of space, and homeowners don’t have to worry about HOA fees or guidelines. A few stray beachfront homes sit along Delaware Bay close to the East Point Lighthouse. All homes use septic systems and water wells. Those who live close to the Delaware Bay, Maurice River and Manumuskin River have to keep an eye out for flooding, as areas close to the water may land in the FEMA flood zone AE. This means there's a 1% chance of flooding each year and a 26% chance during a 30-year mortgage. “Certain roadways do flood during extreme tides and weather conditions, including Glade Road in Heislerville/Delmont, sections of East Point Road in Heislerville and Thompsons Beach Road in Heislerville,” says the Township Clerk, Denise Peterson.

Driving to Millville or Cape May County

New Jersey State Routes 47 and 347 cut through town and run from Millville to the shores of Cape May County. State Route 49 splits the northern part of the township. Driving is the only way to get around and out of town, as the area lacks sidewalks, buses and trains. Those who commute into Cape May County have a roughly 18-mile drive. Route 47 also takes drivers 57 miles, or about an hour, north to Philadelphia, and the Leesburg Belleplain Road heads east to Atlantic City, 42 miles from the township.

Commune with butterflies at the Monarch Festival

The East Point Lighthouse, built in 1849, operates as an active lighthouse for the United States Coast Guard and draws in visitors with seasonal events and a museum open on the weekends. Bay Day in June brings families and neighbors out for games, live music, history displays and food. Dermott mentions the Monarch Festival in September, where folks can get up close to monarch butterflies, smell fresh flowers and create butterfly-themed crafts. Peterson also mentions the township's Family Night Out in August, with its fireworks and vendors, and the Fall Fest in October, where visitors get together for trunk or treat, pumpkin painting and food. Hit the Stars Learning with Horses offers equine-based mental health services, and the organization works with the local 4-H group and hosts the Fall Apples for Horses Festival every September.

Maurice River Diner a favorite for 18 years

Maurice River Diner has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for over 18 years, and the cannoli French toast is a crowd favorite. The daily specials can be found written in bright colors on the foldable menu board near the front entrance. Next door, Lillian’s Market sells fresh produce and plants through the summer and fall. Bailey’s Seafood is a small family-owned shop that sells live blue crabs and premade side dishes, like coleslaw and potato salad. Dermott says it takes 15 minutes to get into Millville, where she goes for groceries. Target, Aldi, Walmart and ShopRite are near the Cumberland Mall, a small center with over 60 shops and restaurants.
