Old Town pairs historic homes with walkability
The small Maywood community of Old Town combines a historic setting with city-like convenience. "It's mostly residential and a pretty quiet neighborhood," says Marsha Burton, an IT manager at Maywood Public Library District and longtime Maywood resident. Homes dating back more than 150 years underscore the neighborhood’s name, and its central location means residents can walk to the village's namesake park and library or Metra's Maywood Station. The locally owned restaurants on Lake Street are close to home and near Interstate 290.
Most homes in Old Town were built in late 19th-century and early 20th-century.

A mix of National Folk, American Foursquare and ranch-style houses
Mature white oaks and elms line the neighborhood's streets. National Folk, American Foursquare and ranch-style homes make up most of the neighborhood. While the most homes date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, a few were built during the mid-20th century. Many feature driveways and detached garages, and streets are wide enough for off-street parking. Single-family homes typically sell between $110,000 and $345,000. A few multifamily properties are also available and range in price from $230,000 to $420,000.

Recreation from Maywood Park to the local library and Thatcher Woods
Short strolls lead to Maywood Park, which has a playground, basketball court and baseball diamond. “It’s a pretty busy park,” Burton says. The adjoining Veterans Memorial honors those lost during World War II. The nearby Maywood Public Library offers free Wi-Fi, public computers and its book collection. Lightford Recreation Center hosts various Maywood Park District programs, including Kids Zone Summer Camp. Wildlife teems along Thatcher Woods' forested trails just over a mile northeast. “[The center] puts out a seasonal pamphlet with their programs and other things going on at the preserve,” Burton adds.

Local spots along Lake Street and big-box shopping in downtown Oak Park
Lake Street is less than a quarter mile north of the neighborhood. “If people are going out to eat, they are going to Lake Street,” Burton says. Restaurant Nuevo Amanecer is one of several Mexican restaurants along the stretch and makes handmade tortillas with authentic dishes. Scudiero’s Italian Bakery & Deli is a family-owned spot that has served the community with pizza, bread and cannoli since 1954. Carnicerias Jimenez is nearby and sells Hispanic goods and fresh produce. Lake Street leads east into Downtown Oak Park, which has a Jewel-Osco and major retailers like Old Navy and Target.

Annual events and community support from local houses of worship
Maywood Park is a gathering spot for several village-wide events, from easter egg hunts to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in December. According to Burton, Maywood Fest is a community staple. “I go to that every year,” she says. “It’s a three-day festival, and all the families come out and have a good time.” The early September celebration fills the park with live music, food vendors and activities for all ages. Holy Corinthian Baptist Church, one of several local houses of worship, hosts a weekly food pantry every Saturday and periodic clothing drives.
