Slaughter is an eclectic Texas suburb known for its schools

At first glance, Slaughter may seem like a typical Texas suburb about 35 miles north of Dallas. However, this neighborhood stands out with big-city amenities, like convenient shopping areas, Tex-Mex restaurants and a newer housing stock in the historic city of McKinney. Centered around a reputable elementary school, Slaughter has a family oriented atmosphere with green spaces and eclectic homes on the city's west side. "It has master-planned communities, and there is quite a variety of properties, from small homes to large estates," says Leigh Calvert, an area local and broker associate at Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty.

Eclectic properties and brick ranch-style homes on flat lots

Single-level houses sit on flat lots with Texas live oak trees and sidewalks. Slaughter features Craftsman, New Traditional and ranch-style homes. The median year of construction is 1996, indicating a mix of houses built in the 20th century and the early 2000s. The average property size is about 2,000 square feet. One of Slaughter's communities is Sandy Glen, which has a homeowners' association and brick ranch-style homes near Mary Will Craig Park. Prices range from $270,000 to $820,000. Townhouses are available, costing between $280,000 and $400,000. "McKinney is a cheaper area, but the west side is a little more expensive near Slaughter," Calvert says. Properties along U.S. Highway 75 may be prone to traffic noise. The area also experiences extreme heat waves, with average summer highs around 95°F during July and August, sometimes exceeding triple-digit temperatures.

As across the board and daycare centers

This neighborhood is best known for its accommodating schools. Slaughter Elementary School earns an A-minus grade from Niche and has extracurricular activities such as a morning announcements crew and STEM club. Dr. Jack Cockrill Middle School receives an A and was a 2024 Texas School to Watch based on its high organizational and academic achievement. Also with an A grade, McKinney Boyd High School offers technical career-oriented courses, such as nursing science, law enforcement and graphic design.

This area also provides pre-kindergarten education through preschools and daycare centers, such as the Learning Experience, Heritage Learning Center and McKinney Academy.

Strip malls, Tex-Mex and Downtown McKinney

Strip malls, chains and local restaurants are within a mile of Slaughter, along U.S. Highway 70. Jungle Burger serves loaded cheeseburgers, fries and halal options in a café-style sandwich eatery. The Blue Goose Cantina serves Tex-Mex dishes in a space with festive lighting and Western décor. Local supermarkets include Kroger and Sprouts Farmers Market. Downtown McKinney offers local boutiques and diverse dining options, around 2 miles west. On Saturday mornings, the year-round McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square has more than 75 vendors with locally sourced produce and handmade goods. These are just some of the things that make the city a desirable suburb. "Other communities come to McKinney for the entertainment and activities," Calvert says. "Homeowners can stay in town and don't need to reach other places."

Take the Wilson Creek Trail to nearby green spaces

Several green spaces are nearby, including Mary Will Craig Park at the neighborhood center. It features a concrete skatepark, a basketball court and a colorful jungle gym behind Slaughter Elementary School. Al Ruschhaupt Park has a soccer complex and a splash pad. The Wilson Creek Trail is a paved path that extends about 10 miles through the local park system. It also reaches Bonnie Wenk Park, which has a scenic pond and a 2-acre off-leash dog park.

Short trip to Dallas and the airports

Collin County Transit provides an on-demand bus service for qualifying passengers who need assistance. U.S. Highway 75 heads to Dallas, about 35 miles south. Fort Worth is around 60 miles southwest on state Route 121. Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport are within 35 miles of Slaughter. "It has easy access to the airport," Calvert says. "Geographically, it's on the main thoroughfare between Dallas and Lake Texoma, so it's a great stop-off point for people traveling through the area."
