A slower pace in Merrimac

Once a mill town, Merrimac is now a charming New England community beloved by its residents. With plenty of ways to connect with nature and an array of modern conveniences, Merrimac is a small suburban town that values a high quality of life at a slower pace. "It's Merrimac's small-town feel that draws people to live there," says Rosalee DiScipio, an Essex County resident and Realtor with Lamacchia Realty. "You still get a rural feel, but it's easily commutable with its proximity to the highways."

Eclectic homes from 1800s to present

Along Merrimac's quiet sidewalk-lined streets dotted with leafy, mature trees sit a charming mix of home styles from colonials and Cape Cods to bungalows and ranch styles. Some of Merrimac's eclectic collection of homes date back as far as the mid-1800s, while many were built between the 1950s and 1990s, with some new builds in the mix, too. "There's a wide variety of home ages in Merrimac," DiScipio says."You can get a house that's 200 years old or two days old." Home sizes range from 1,100 to 4,000 square feet with two to five bedrooms, and prices span from $175,000 to over $1.2 million. "Merrimac tends to be more affordable and has lower tax rates than some of the other nearby areas," DiScipio adds.

Growing Pentucket Regional School District

Merrimac children attend schools in the Pentucket Regional School District, which has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Students can begin at the Dr. Frederick N. Sweetsir School, rated a B-minus by Niche, for prekindergarten through second grade. Third through sixth-grade students can go to the Helen R. Donaghue School, also rated a B-minus, and secondary students can attend Pentucket Regional Middle and Pentucket Regional High School, both of which earn B-plus ratings. "Merrimac's tri-town school district has a beautiful new junior-senior high school building," DiScipio says.

Hiking and biking at Merrimac Town Forest

Merrimac is a popular spot for outdoor life, especially biking and hiking. The Merrimac Town Forest has more than 300 acres of green space, including almost 4 miles of trails that are considered easy climbing. The Jay McLaren Memorial Trail is a 2-mile, no-frills walking-and-biking trail that follows an old railbed up to New Hampshire.

Dining and shopping in Merrimac

The community may have a small-town feel, but it doesn't lack conveniences. The area is home to several eateries, including a Dunkin' coffee and donut chain location and Osaka Asian Bistro. Towne Café on East Main Street is a local favorite for savory breakfast sandwiches and bold coffee. DeLeo’s Pizza is an independently owned and operated restaurant with hand-tossed pizzas and calzones, plus salads and subs. Towne Market at the center of town in Merrimac Square, the area’s main grocery and convenience store, is well-stocked with food items and well-loved by residents. There are also a few farmer's markets with fresh produce available during the spring and summer months.

Old Home Days

Each year, the town of Merrimac comes together for annual events, including a town-wide yard sale, scarecrow competition, Santa parade and the biggest of them all: Merrimac Old Home Days. This three-day celebration is Merrimac’s longest-running festival that features live music, a beer garden, a craft fair, a bike rodeo, a silent auction, and more.
