The suburban neighborhood of Westgate offers the best of big-city conveniences while maintaining a small-town feel. Homes here range from detached single-family houses to stately apartments and beyond. Modest, ranch-style houses are popular in the neighborhood, as are midcentury modern homes with brick exteriors. Students in the neighborhood have a myriad of private, parochial and public schools to choose from. Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies provides challenging classes for children who thrive on problem solving and critical thinking skills through project-based learning activities, technology integration and in-depth research. John Q. Adams Middle School rests on 10.5 acres near Lake Pontchartrain and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It has several zoological atriums, a talent center and a performing arts center. East Jefferson High School was founded in 1955 and is one of the most diverse public high schools in Louisiana according to Niche.
The Westgate neighborhood has all manner of specialty stores. Vivid Palms, for instance, specializes in growing and maintaining almost a dozen species of palm trees. The staff are experts on each species they sell, and the stock ranges from four- to 25-foot-tall trees. There are also numerous grocery stores and markets in the area to make finding everyday essentials easy. La Pulperia is a specialty grocery providing Central American ingredients such as mango, plantains, tamarind candies, and produce.
Westgate has a multitude of bars, restaurants, and sweet shops. One of the most popular is Red Apple. This community gathering spot is known for its modern take on traditional Chinese fare. Sandros Trattoria is a family-owned restaurant taking diners to Tuscany nightly. Established in 2004, it's been serving up authentic Italian cuisine and owner Sandro’s personal favorites for nearly 20 years. Then there’s Thai Zapp Café. This eatery offers vegetarian options in a family-friendly environment. With lunch and dinner specials, authentic Thai food is never far out of reach. For something sweet, La Michoacana is more than just an ice cream shop. This treat of a store offers agua frescas, sorbets, and traditional Mexican street foods like elote and tamarind candies.
One of Westgate’s most popular attractions is Lafreniere Park. The 155-acre green space was created by a community initiative in the late 1970s and was completed in 1982. Since then, the park has become a focal point for the community with its everyday pleasures as well as numerous festivals throughout the year. The tranquil space contains a two-mile jogging and walking trail, a pavilion island with multiple picnic tables, two playgrounds, and a 20-acre lagoon.
The park is also home to an 18-hole disc golf course, several multi-use fields for baseball and soccer, and a covered carousel with more than 30 moving horses, tigers, zebras, and an ADA-accessible chariot. Open daily, Lafreniere Park is picturesque with manicured gardens and fountains. Pets are welcome, and there’s a dog park where pups can play off-leash.
Located just 25 minutes from downtown New Orleans, Westgate offers easy access to major roadways, specialty stores, everyday essentials and great dining choices.
