Mountain life with resort amenities in Middlecreek Township
Some people want to get away from city life and live in seclusion among mountains and forests, and Middlecreek Township in Somerset County has a balance of outdoor destinations and access to larger cities nearby. The rural area has multiple campgrounds, a popular ski resort and over 4,000 acres of state park land. Jenny Harancher is a Realtor with Highland Resort Realty who knows the area well. “I grew up here, but I moved to Pittsburgh because that’s where my husband is from,” Harancher says. “We moved back about 10 years ago. It’s a great place for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy the peacefulness of being in the mountains. We love to ski, and Ohiopyle is close, and there’s whitewater rafting there.”
Residents who live here full-time have cabins with forests for backyards and plenty of space between neighbors, while being within 20 minutes of Somerset’s restaurants and stores. There are outdoor destinations to explore in all four seasons, but tourism picks up during the summer and when there’s enough snow to ski or snowboard. Most of the time, vacationers who want a place to stay during the winter buy second homes close to the resort.

Visiting Seven Springs Resort or Laurel Hill State Park
Seven Springs is busiest during the winter with skiing and snowboarding, but there are things to do year-round. “We get a lot of interest during ski season, but Seven Springs is a four-season resort. We sell all year round,” Harancher says. “There’s hiking, an adventure center, and the Alpine Slide is popular.” Seven Springs also hosts Autumnfest for three weekends in October, where visitors shop local vendors, enjoy live performances and browse the pumpkin patch. The nine-hole Middlecreek Golf Course is a semi-private space, meaning golfers can pay public fees or join on an annual basis.
Laurel Hill State Park spans over 4,000 acres with trails, campgrounds and lake access. Visitors take in the views as they kayak along Laurel Hill Lake or hike the Pumphouse Trail to see the Jones Mill Run Dam built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The park's Scenic View Overlook is high enough to look down on the rolling hills of the highlands, and the Sunset Concert Series is held at the overlook every summer.

Townhouses and condos or cabins and cottages in Middlecreek Township
Most of the homes sold in the township are close to the Seven Springs Resort and are often second homes. “There’s a mix of homes, but most are townhomes and condos,” Harancher says. “A one-bedroom condo can go for $100,000, and a five-bedroom townhouse can sell for $2 million. It just depends on the size.” Cottages and cabins built in the 1950s are in the eastern half of the township, surrounded by trees and a handful of neighbors. Rustic properties like these can sell for $56,000 to over $200,000, depending on the size and recent renovations. Harancher says there’s a mix of move-in ready cabins and properties people buy to turn into Air B&Bs. The CAP Index gives the township a 1 out of 10 crime, lower than the national average of 4. The Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department’s fire station is on Seven Spring Resort’s campus, but the department responds to calls in Seven Springs and surrounding areas.

Learning in Rockwood Area schools
Rockwood Area School District serves the township with two schools. Rockwood Area Elementary School earns a B-minus from Niche. In 2022, Rockwood Area Elementary was one of 10 Pennsylvania schools to receive the National Blue Ribbon title. Rockwood Area High School gets a B and is ranked as the best public high school in Somerset County by Niche. Some sports don’t have enough athlete participation, so the district organized co-op teams, like Berlin’s football team and Meyersdale’s girls wrestling team. Rockwood Area High School still runs basketball, swimming and rifle teams. Parents and guardians fill out bus stop request forms to list primary, secondary and emergency bus stop locations for their kids, but anyone who prefers to drive travels about 8 miles for 16 minutes to the campus.

Shopping and dining in Somerset, Donegal or New Centerville
Middlecreek Township may feel secluded, but the area is 15 miles from Somerset — about a 20-minute drive. Somerset has the UPMC Somerset hospital, grocery stores and restaurants. Residents can pick up last-minute needs and locally sourced items at Highlands Market, but the Walmart Supercenter and Giant Eagle Supermarket in Somerset are the nearest chain grocery stores. Visitors flying in and residents traveling away catch flights at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, 33 miles northwest in Latrobe.
Businesses within the township are few and far between, but the Trenthouse Inn has been a bed and breakfast since 2006. The home was built in 1884, but owner Mary Ann renovated it inside and out to create a place for wedding rehearsals and resting after a hike through Laurel Hill State Park. The inn serves breakfast and lunch Fridays through Sundays for visitors and anyone looking for a dine-out spot. Zambo’s Country Cottage in New Centerville serves classic American dishes, while Dough Girl’s Pizza offers Italian dishes and homemade desserts. Harancher mentions Out of the Fire Cafe and HillBilly's Grub & Pub in Donegal, about 10 miles west or a 15-minute drive.
