Brand-new homes mix with Frank Lloyd Wright designs

Homes are a mixture of brand-new houses closer to Madison and older homes farther west. Most properties along Middleton’s western edge were built from the 1960s to the 1990s, while the central and southeast sections of the town are full of residential areas developed from the 2000s to the mid-2020s. “There are a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes. There’s a whole neighborhood out there with his style of homes,” says Kelley Muselman, a Realtor with Realty Executives Cooper Spransy’s Minter Team. “It’s definitely growing.” Condos and townhouses smaller than 2,000 square feet have sold from the mid- $200,000s to the low $500,000s, while larger ones go from the low $400,000s to the low $900,000s. Single-family homes smaller than 2,500 square feet vary in price from the mid-$400,000s to low-$800,000s. Those between 2,500 and 6,000 square feet have sold from the mid-$500,000s to the mid-$1,600,000s, while larger homes with lot sizes up to 9,000 square feet run from the mid-$1,200,000s to the low-$3,400,000s. The town’s median sale price is $610,000, higher than the median for the cities of Middleton and Madison.

U.S. Route 12 serves as the area’s main retail corridor, with shopping centers on both sides. “Middleton has great shopping. They’ve got Greenway Station — great food out there,” Muselman says. Highway-side retail hubs include:* Greenway Station, featuring a HomeGoods, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant and the Ancho and Agave Mexican restaurant * The Prairie Towne Center, which includes a Target and Metro Market * Commerce Drive, with a Menards home improvement store and Brennan’s Market * The West Towne Mall across the highway, with plenty of big-box stores and a food court The city of Middleton’s downtown area is right across the highway from the town’s northern edge, and it includes plenty of boutique shops, local pubs and established eateries. “Middleton has a cute little area called Stone Horse Green,” Muselman says. “They have little concerts in the park, and there’s a whole bunch of little shops and restaurants around there.”

Local parks preserve woodlands, savannas and spaces for hiking

Around half of the town consists of open farm fields and preserved woodlands. Part of the 1,200-mile-long Ice Age National Trail, which follows the path of migratory glaciers, runs along Middleton’s western edge. Hikers have access to several trailheads, including at Cross Plains State Park. Nature preserves like the Pope Farm Conservancy and Goth Conservancy allow nature lovers to explore miles of oak savanna and wildflowers. “There’s also the Pheasant Branch Conservancy out there - lots of walking, lots of nature,” Muselman says. Smaller green spaces like Blackhawk Park and Eagle Trace Park put playgrounds, baseball fields and other outdoor activities around every corner. Pleasant View Golf Course, which includes three nine-hole courses, is open to the public.

Middleton celebrates local creativity with annual events

Residents of both the town and city of Middleton often meet up for the Middleton Good Neighbor Festival at the Fireman's Park every August. Held on the last full weekend in August before Labor Day, the event includes a themed parade, a 5K run or walk, live music and arts and artisan vendors. Middleton also hosts city-wide events like the springtime Bockfest beer festival and summertime art walks.

Downtown Madison is 10 miles down U.S. Route 14

U.S. Route 14 and the Old Sauk Road each connect Middleton to downtown Madison, 10 miles away. UW Health’s Junction Road Medical Center serves as the local hospital. “From Middleton, you can go north and hit Baraboo in 45 minutes. The Dells is about 45 minutes from there, too,” Muselman says.
