A cemetery, 1920s-era homes and industrial jobs in Meadowlawn
More than 2,000 carefully landscaped trees and shrubs shade century-old gravestones in Woodside Cemetery. Established in the 1890s less than 2 miles from downtown Middletown, the cemetery anchors a neighborhood known as Meadowlawn, where dozens of homes were built for steelworkers throughout the 1920s. "Middletown and Armco Steel have a long, long history," explains Victoria Torgersen of Comey & Shepherd Realty, adding that many of the city's residential neighborhoods, like Meadowlawn, grew during the company's heyday. Although AK Steel moved its headquarters in the early 2000s, other industrial jobs have remained in the area. There are gas suppliers, steel fabricators, packaging centers and more near Meadowlawn's southern border, which bring jobs to residents.
Woodside Cemetery, established in the 1890s, provides a serene space for residents to reflect and find peace. It's a lovely spot for quiet contemplation.
AK Steel was a major employer for residents of Meadowlawn.

Big-box and chain options like Save A Lot for groceries are a few minutes away along Roosevelt Boulevard. Local breweries host weekly events. "Downtown, there have been a lot of folks that have worked hard to bring a vibrant energy… there's bars and restaurants and breweries coming in," says Hillman, speaking to the city's growing nightlife scene.
