On Milwaukee's southwest side, Burnham Park is a neighborhood where historic landmarks mingle with modern community spaces. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright built a community of model homes called the Burnham Block here in the early 1900s, which is down the road from a colorful spray park and playground built more than a century later. Also home to a bilingual school and plenty of local restaurants and grocery stores, Burnham Park gives residents a lively, walkable place to call home that’s less than 5 miles from the city center.

1910s bungalows and Cape Cods under $300K
Closely packed blocks of single-family homes were developed throughout Burnham Park in the early 1900s. Buyers can find many bungalows in the neighborhood, both in simple National styles and more ornate Craftsman designs. Duplexes and other small multifamily properties are also scattered around the neighborhood. Because of these multifamily properties, more residents rent rather than own homes in Burnham Park. Single-family and multifamily properties can sell from the lower $100,000s to the lower $300,000s, depending on condition and number of units. Burnham Park has a median single-family home price in the lower $200,000s. That’s on par with nearby Layton Park, lower than National Park and higher than Silver City and Muskego Way.

A renovated playfield near large Milwaukee County parks
Burnham Playfield is at the heart of Burnham Park, a longstanding community park that was renovated in 2022. “All the updates for Burnham Playfield were informed by a lot of robust feedback from the community,” says Pamela Zimmerman, facilities coordinator at Milwaukee Recreation. “Even the colors of the playgrounds.” Residents enjoy the playfield’s many modern amenities, including baseball diamonds, a synthetic turf soccer field, basketball courts, a splash pad and playground equipment. Larger Milwaukee County destination parks are about five minutes away, including Mitchell Park, known for its iconic horticultural domes, and Jackson Park, popular for its scenic pond and pop-up farmers market.
Walkable to specialty Milwaukee Public Schools
Burnham Park is part of Milwaukee Public Schools. Families in MPS can send kids to assigned neighborhood schools or apply to specialty and charter options across the city. A few of the district’s schools are within walking distance, including Greenfield Bilingual School. Greenfield provides prekindergarten through eighth grade students with specialty Spanish bilingual and English as a second language education.

A short drive to East Town and the Menomonee Valley
Commuters head north to Interstate 94 on the 5-mile drive to East Town. Many other commercial and industrial employers are closer to home in West Milwaukee or down in the Menomonee Valley. A handful of bike lanes, extensive sidewalks and several Milwaukee County Transit System bus routes give you options for getting around Milwaukee’s southwest side.
Visiting Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block
Arts and Crafts architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the six homes of the Burnham Block to model how the country’s builders could focus on both function and artistry. Built in 1916, a couple of the homes are preserved and open for tours to this day. You’ll need to pay and make an appointment to take a look around, but residents can also wait for discounted or free admission weekends, like the annual Doors Open Milwaukee event.
