Animal lovers unite in Cannon Park
Cannon Park is the type of place where pet owners can spot their fellow pet-loving neighbors walking their dogs every day down the sidewalks to the neighborhood park. Not many Milwaukee neighborhoods also offer animal-centered delights like Cannon Park, like such close access to the Milwaukee County Zoo, where residents can get up close and personal with four-legged, finned, winged, or even tentacled friends from around the world.

Early 20th century abodes at fair prices
Cannon Park is a heavily residential West Side neighborhood, with mostly winding streets and clusters of mature trees covering the bulk of its acreage. Its roughly 2,300 residents live primarily in homes from the first half of the 20th century, including plenty of ranch-style homes, both single-level and raised. Cape Cods are also quite common here, as are rectangular Colonial constructions. The occasional stone- or brick-faced Tudor will pop into view, plus a few split-level homes here and there. Smaller homes with less square footage typically list between $225,000 and $320,000, even with recent remodels factored in. Larger floor plans with more bedrooms can cost as much as $400,000.

Park games and zoo adventures
Natives needn’t go far to explore the sights and sounds of nature in and around Cannon Park. The neighborhood’s eponymous park features roughly 9 acres of outdoor space, including a baseball practice field, a soccer field, a basketball half-court and a playground. However, the area’s signature spot for adventure is the Milwaukee County Zoo, which lies just across Interstate 41 to the west. Founded in 1892, this 190-acre wildlife showcase is home to more than 2,000 animals and over 300 species. Visitors can see everything from big cats to sea life, plus hippo and elephant exhibits that just opened in recent years. “We’re only closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, so people can visit the zoo any time of the year,” Marketing Communications Director Laura Pedriani says. “We have events year-round, but one of our larger events is called A La Carte at the Zoo. It’s a food and entertainment festival, and it happens the third weekend in August. We have 20 restaurants and six stages of entertainment.”

Fountains of food and farm-to-cup coffees
While the zoo has plenty of on-site eats for visitors, there are several spots in Cannon Park for everyday residents to satiate their appetites. The neighborhood’s main sit-down restaurant is La Fuente, a traditional Mexican joint with a namesake burbling fountain sitting at its center. Here, customers can sip on giant margaritas while digging into a sizzling plate of fajitas or a ground beef enchilada, among other entrees. Meanwhile, hidden on the ground floor of a business park in the southern part of the neighborhood is Brim Café and Catering. This tucked-away business serves breakfast and lunch five days a week, from Belgian waffles and breakfast burritos to personal pizzas and paninis. Just north of the neighborhood is Stone Creek Coffee, a small, Milwaukee-based chain proudly serving “farm to cup” coffee since 1993. When locals need to refill their pantries, they head east to Pick ‘n Save, the neighborhood’s closest brand-name grocery store.
