When visiting Northridge, a neighborhood in northern Milwaukee, it’s hard to ignore the largely empty shopping mall occupying its southeast quadrant. Believe it or not, Northridge Mall was once among Milwaukee’s most exciting shopping destinations. Its creation in the early 1970s corresponded with the construction of many surrounding houses, condominiums and apartments. The mall ceased operations in 2003, but its neighboring residential subdivisions remain and have welcomed more homes in recent decades. About 2,300 Milwaukeeans live in Northridge today, within a quick drive of big-box retailers and the dynamic village of Brown Deer.

From condos to Colonials
A cluster of homes borders Northridge Mall to the north and west, with forest and parkland lying beyond. They sit along winding, sidewalk-lined streets on lots averaging just under 1/5 of an acre. Colonial-style homes are the most common, interspersed with split-level, Tudor, Craftsman and ranch-style designs. A few Colonials were built in the early 2000s, standing out among their neighbors from the 1970s and ‘80s. Several townhouse-style duplexes and condominium buildings offer multi-family housing in the neighborhood. Homebuyers can find two-bedroom condos for under $100,000 or spend up to the $400,000s for a four-bedroom 2007 Colonial.

Hiking trails through woods and prairies
Kohl Park, named for the family that oversaw Northridge Mall’s construction, occupies Northridge’s northern section. It covers over 270 acres, though much of its area contains hard-to-access farmland. Among its publicly accessible amenities is its extensive community garden. A heavily wooded trail is also available in the park, taking runners, hikers and birdwatchers past a long-dormant silo. Meanwhile, Northridge neighbors the city of Mequon and has near-immediate access to the 510-acre Mequon Nature Preserve. This public green space to the north offers 6 miles of trails, a maple syrup-tapping station, expansive wetlands and prairies, and an observation tower to take it all in.

Retail and restaurants on Brown Deer Road
Though its commercial heyday has passed, Northridge is still home to several businesses. Menards operates a hardware store on the mall’s campus, while several restaurants appear along Brown Deer Road. These include local chains like JJ Fish and Chicken, big-name franchises like Denny’s and a few independent spots. Among the latter is Thai Bangkok, a non-flashy Thai eatery known for its curry noodles. Less than 1 mile east is Family Table, a longstanding American diner serving chicken and waffles and other favorites. “It’s been in the area for at least 30 years, and people still go there,” says Realty Executives Integrity Broker Executive Dionne Barnes. “Locals also have access to shopping at Aldi and Walmart in that area.”
