Next to Havenwoods State Forest, Thurston Woods is a neighborhood in northern Milwaukee. Known for its neighborly spirit, the densely arranged area has a sense of community. Thurston Woods also stands out for its classic homes, many dating back a century or more.
There are plenty of midcentury ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, but Thurston Woods is especially known for its turn-of-the-20th-century bungalows. Many homes have been updated with modern kitchens and finished basements while still keeping their original character. The median sale price is around the mid-$100,000s, and homes generally range from about $60,000 to the lower $200,000s. That puts home prices in line with Silver Spring and McGovern Park, but mostly lower than Crestwood. "The homes here are affordable, but they've also got character," says Chris Slinker, principal broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. Slinker emphasizes the idea that a huge selling point tends to be around the tight-knit nature of the community. "It's not the sort of place where you don't know your neighbors," he says. "It's a hidden gem in the city."
Thurston Woods is part of Milwaukee Public Schools, where families can apply all over the district through the school choice system. Thurston Woods School serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade and partners with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, giving students opportunities to experience live musical performances.
Havenwoods State Forest, the only urban state forest in Wisconsin, spans over 200 acres of wilderness. More than six miles of trails welcome visitors, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available in winter. Over 200 bird species have been identified on the property, and an environmental education center hosts programs and wildlife exhibits. “We do public animal feedings once a month, so people actually get to learn about the native animals and see them eat,” says Property Supervisor Angela Vickio. To the south, McGovern Park covers about 60 acres and includes a remnant beech-maple forest, a four-acre fishing lake and a playground.
While the neighborhood is mostly residential, you'll find a mix of local favorites along with well-known restaurants just a short drive away. Here are a few popular spots:
Downtown Milwaukee is less than 10 miles away. "It's secluded enough that you feel farther away from the city, but you're actually pretty close to it," says Slinker. "You don't have the craziness of the city." The Milwaukee County Transit System offers bus service throughout the area, with stops along Silver Spring Drive and Teutonia Avenue.
