Close to the city without the noise of downtown
Just south of the western stretch of the Kinnickinnic River is White Manor, a leafy neighborhood in Milwaukee's Southwest Side. Winding streets and thoroughfares fill the neighborhood's roughly quarter of a square mile lined with architectural designs from post-World War II. Several convenient shops and a lovely public park lie on its edges. Houses in White Manor have sidewalks connecting them to the walkable neighborhood. With trees lining most streets, it's a pleasant place to stroll under the shade of mature trees. Though the neighborhood is quiet, "It's still very close to the city," says Dawn Kamalian, a real estate agent at Shorewest Realtors. "It has less noise and traffic than other areas downtown."

Small homes with just enough yard space
Homebuyers can expect to spot plenty of mid-20th century ranch-style homes, many faced with brick and featuring simple floor plans. Older Cape Cod houses and small Colonial Revivals also line the streets. Houses in White Manor rarely exceed the $300,000 mark. Still, some multi-unit properties in White Manor exist towards the higher end of the scale. The median cost for single-family houses is $217,000, with some fixer-uppers costing somewhere in the mid-$100,000s. The small yards behind each house are perfect for those wanting some privacy for gardens, swing sets or above-ground pools. Detached garages are also standard in the neighborhood, which come in handy for sheltering cars during winter snowstorms. Like all neighborhoods in the greater Milwaukee area, houses sell much faster than the national average. Those lucky enough to get a house in White Manor tend to stay for the long haul.

Tacos, friend chicken and cocktails within a short walk
A locally owned pharmacy and two grocery stores, Aldi and El Rey Family Market, operate in town. The latter is a fixture of Milwaukee's Hispanic culture, and there, visitors can do more than stock up on groceries; they can enjoy a taco at the in-house taqueria, pick up a pastry from the bakery, or sip on a healthy drink from the juice bar. Other locally owned eats are outside the neighborhood's southern end, including Crispy and Grill, which sends patrons home with deliciously golden buckets of fried chicken and catfish. Docci's Pool and Darts is White Manor's go-to watering hole, featuring a pool table, dart board, and several screens to enjoy the Brewers or Bucks game. Driving north on S 43rd St will bring shoppers to a major retail destination with familiar chain restaurants, big box stores and national grocers.
