Spending time on the Dog River is a top neighborhood pastime
From Cypress Shores, a boat ride to the rustic charms of the River Shack, a restaurant beside the Dog River, is a invigorating lunchtime commute. About half of the residents in this coastal community enjoy waterfront living within the river's watershed, a vast network of tributaries flowing toward Mobile Bay. The rest of the homes may not be on the water, but they do have easy access to the beauty of Dolphin Island to the south. With a mix of traditional residential subdivisions and coastal properties, homes styles in Cypress Shores are eclectic. “It's primary residences and secondary,” says Melissa Strickland, a Realtor with Keller Williams Spring Hills. “You may have a fish camp setting and a very luxurious house.”

Paddlers look to the Dog River for recreation. The Dog River Scenic Blueway is an eight-mile paddling trail that flows past several access points for kayaks and canoes. Other watersports include boating, jet skiing, waterskiing, fishing and swimming. Dauphin Island, a barrier island famed for its sunsets and white-sand beaches, is 25 miles south of Cypress Shores. “The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a really cool place,” Strickland says. “It's a state-funded education and research lab.” It also doubles as an interactive aquarium. Dauphin Island is also popular for bike riding, and birdwatchers can explore three miles of trails at the Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary.

Waterfront homes have deep water access to the river
For boat owners, Cypress Shores is the ultimate happy place. Many homes overlook the Dog River and its tributaries, including Halls Mill Creek and Rabbit Creek. Boat docks, porches and water views are highly touted amenities. Other homes cluster in subdivisions with quick access to the I-10. Roomy front yards and set-back homes are commonly seen, and many homes sit at the end of cul-de-sacs that end at the river. Privacy is a highlight, but the neighborhood overall isn’t secluded. Home styles include ranchers, Craftsman bungalows and larger new traditional estates. “It's a very established area,” says Strickland. “You can buy older and smaller homes, $300 to 400, up to one million.” Coastal living does have a drawback: higher insurance premiums thanks to the increased hurricane risk.

Neighbors paddle to the MudBottom Revival Music Festival
Bands bring the funk to Bender Point for the MudBottom Revival Music Festival, which is a fundraising event every April in support of the Dog River. Locals bike, kayak, canoe, boat and paddleboard to this family friendly party, which is hosted by the Dog River Clearwater Revival (DRCR). The group also organizes river clean-up events and hosts a fishing tournament in October. The city of Mobile traces its roots to French founders, and locals claim that Mardi Gras parties originated here rather than in New Orleans. Mobile celebrates with parades, masquerade balls and king cake.
Locals can shop in Tillmans Corner and take yoga classes by the river
It’s a six-mile drive to the Grand Mariner Restaurant and its downriver neighbor the River Shack, but it’s a lot more fun to boat there. The Grand Mariner serves fried seafood baskets and fish tacos by the water while the River Shack is known for its burgers and seafood. The River Shack also hosts karaoke nights, yoga on the dock and the occasional crawfish boil. Despite the coastal vibe and lack of big stores in the neighborhood, Cypress Shores is not isolated. “You’re going to have to leave that area to go to the grocery store, but it's not a long drive,” says Strickland. The community is just three miles east of Tillmans Corner, which is home to shopping centers and a Walmart Supercenter with a grocery store.
