Urban Oakdale is one of the historic districts near downtown Mobile and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It gives locals a mostly residential feel with proximity to the hustle and bustle of the business district. From a wide selection of smaller single-family houses homes to Mobile County Public Schools, residents of Oakdale can experience city living complete with Mardi Gras celebrations. “There’s a lot of tradition with cookouts and hangouts in lots and vacant land. People pay to be in the yards for Mardi Gras, and it’s close to the downtown entertainment district,” says Realtor Heidi Hall who works with IXL Real Estate LLC and has 16 years of experience with the area.
Smaller home sizes and lots
South of downtown Mobile, the neighborhood is mostly composed of grid-style blocks of smaller lots dense with towering oak trees that shade the streets. The area isn’t walkable for errands but had bus stops. As for the architecture, the homes in Oakdale tend to be small to medium-sized: a mix of cottages, bungalows, shotgun houses and the occasional ranch-style house. Some of them are colorfully painted or feature front porches with decorative trim. Sales prices range from $28,500 for a cottage to $146,000 for a four-bedroom bungalow. “Some parts are affordable, but the affordability is being phased out with new apartment complexes being built,” Hall says.

From Mardi Gras to the Saenger Theatre
“One of the main reasons people migrate there is because that is Mardi Gras central, where people meet up and camp out in walking distance of the Mardi Gras route,” Hall says. At any time of year, locals can visit the Mobile Carnival Museum to learn about the history of Mardi Gras and view exhibits featuring colorful costumes and parade floats. The beacon of cultural history can seat nearly 2,000 patrons to host the Mobile Symphony Orchestra and the Summer Classic Movie Series.
