Thornhill
Thornhill offers a variety of housing options
Prices and specs vary broadly from subdivision to subdivision. In The Timbers, buyers will find ranch-style homes with brick facades spanning under 1,500 square feet, while the homes of Lamplighter Woods follow other architectural styles too, like Cape Cod and Colonial Revival, and offer 500 to 1,000 additional square feet. “Homes in The Timbers are around the $200,000 mark, while homes in Lamplighter Woods are around the $300,000 mark,” Sessions says. The largest homes can be found in Providence Estates, most spanning above 3,000 square feet and following New Traditional designs with Mediterranean and Colonial Revival influences. These homes usually sell between $400,000 and $600,000. Thornhill also includes apartment complexes and Somerby, a gated 55+ community. Somerby’s homes sell in the $300,000s. Sidewalks are present in all subdivisions.Mobile County Schools and the University of South Alabama
Students can attend E. R. Dickson Elementary, Burns Middle and W. P. Davidson High. Dickson Elementary receives a C-plus rating, while Burns Middle earns a C and W. P. Davidson earns a B-plus. Davidson High students can participate in academic programs like International Baccalaureate and Engineering Pathways Integrated Curriculum (EPIC). The University of South Alabama is less than a 10-minute drive northeast for many residents.Skating and splashing around Thornhill
Residents can skate back into the 1980s at the nostalgically decorated Sunshine Skate Center, open for regular roller skating and rentable for birthday parties. Kids can race and play inside the recently renovated, enclosed playground at Medal of Honor Park, and during summers, it’ll be easy for them to cool off playing at the park’s splash pad. The park also features a dog park, soccer fields, disc golf course and more. For even more green space, locals can head up to Langan Park, which offers picnic pavilions, nature trails, a large pond and 60 tennis courts, as well as being the site of the Mobile Botanical Gardens and Mobile Museum of Art.Shopping and dining close to home
Residents have a diversity of eating options just outside the neighborhood. Residents can dine on lobster Pad Thai and orange chicken at Siam Thai Cuisine or watch talented chefs cook up noodles and shrimp right before their eyes at Bamboo Steakhouse & Sushi Bar. Wintzell’s Oyster House’s most popular dish is given away by the restaurant’s name, but regulars also rave about their gumbo and fried green tomatoes. A Walmart Neighborhood Market can be found in the northeast corner of Thornhill, while Winn-Dixie is just off Grelot Road to the south. Westwood Plaza shopping center is just 5 minutes west on Airport Boulevard, offering stores like Hobby Lobby.A short drive to the airport and hospital
Mobile Regional Airport is a 15-minute drive or less for many Thornhill locals. The airport is also reachable by the Wave bus line 1, though it only runs once every hour. Located on the north end of the neighborhood, USA Health Providence Hospital is within a 5-minute drive of most homes.Pets and paintings
In 2023, Medal of Honor Park kicked off Pet Fest of the Gulf Coast. This multi-day event features animal performances, food vendors and more. Some proceeds go to the American Rescue Foundations. Many more events can be found in downtown Mobile, like the monthly occurring LoDa ArtWalk, which opens Dauphin Street for pedestrian-only traffic and allows visitors to explore and admire art studios and shops.
