Montevallo is a college town south of Birmingham where the creative energy of the University of Montevallo spills into surrounding streets and parks. That spirit shows up in Orr Park, where carved cedar-tree sculptures line the trails along Shoal Creek, and in events like the Montevallo Arts Fest. Homebuyers have a lot of options, from early-1900s Craftsman homes steps from the university to custom country homes on several acres. You can run most of your errands in Montevallo’s small city center and enjoy a meal out on Main Street. Interstate 65 is close by, connecting you to the rest of central Alabama.
What home styles and prices you’ll find in Montevallo
Montevallo has a mix of housing. In the city center, you can find early-1900s Queen Anne and Craftsman homes, midcentury ranch-styles and split-levels, and some newer builds with attached garages. Many of the older homes have been renovated, and they often come with spacious front and backyards. Suburban subdivisions are common near Interstate 65, where homes built since the early 2000s have New Traditional designs and open floor plans. From Shelby County schools to the University of Montevallo
Families are served by the Shelby County Public Schools district. Kids can start at Montevallo Elementary School, which gets a B rating from Niche, then go to the B-plus-rated Montevallo Middle School. Older students can attend the B-minus-rated Montevallo High School, which offers Advanced Placement courses and a work-based learning program that allows students to earn credit for paid work. The University of Montevallo has a large presence in town. The university is known for its fine arts program and is Alabama’s only public liberal arts university. It’s also a major employer for the community.

Getting around Montevallo and commuting to Birmingham
Matthew Farris, a Realtor with eXp Realty, calls Montevallo “a very nice home community, close to major freeways.” I-65 is about 9 miles from Montevallo’s city center, and is a 35-mile drive that takes about 40 minutes. However, some parts of Montevallo are closer to the freeway, and residents there will have shorter commutes. Montevallo’s Main Street area is walkable, and the University of Montevallo partners with the city to offer a bike-sharing program that’s open to all students and community members.
Restaurants and shopping around Main Street
Montevallo has a mix of locally owned restaurants around Main Street and state Route 25. You can grab a bite to eat at these places:
Main Street Tavern, a casual restaurant serving burgers and Southern dishes like fried green tomatoes
Zapopan Mexican Restaurant, the go-to spot for fajitas, enchiladas and margaritas
Meri Moon, a renovated historic movie theater now serving sandwiches and salads
Sunrise Doughnuts, a bakery with sweet doughnuts and savory kolaches
Navarro’s Fresh Market and Lucky’s Foodland Plus are the closest grocery stores, and you can get other essentials at Dollar General, Montevallo Ace Hardware and Tractor Supply Co. Big-box stores like Target and Walmart are about 12 miles away in Alabaster.

Sculptures at Orr Park and living history at the American Village
You can get outside at Orr Park, a roughly 40-acre space along Shoal Creek. While it has athletic fields and picnic pavilions, the park is best known for whimsical carvings that adorn its cedar trees. Local artist Tim Tingle transformed storm-damaged trunks into detailed sculptures of faces, dragons and other fantastical figures throughout the park. A paved walking trail follows the creek, where you can fish or kayak in the water. Stephens Park is the city’s baseball complex, and Shoal Creek Park has hiking trails through the woods. If you’re interested in history, you can step back in time at the American Village, a living-history museum with replicas of Revolutionary-era buildings.

Montevallo hosts a full calendar of events, and the university’s events are also part of the community’s fabric. Here are some popular ones:

Tinglewood Festival, a celebration of woodworking at Orr Park on the first Saturday after Labor Day
