Small town Pennsylvania living along the river
Located along the West Branch Susquehanna River overlooking the rolling Allegheny Mountains, Montgomery is an easygoing community of about 1,400 people 10 miles southeast of Williamsport. Even as the borough has adapted to changing times, Montgomery maintains its small-town, neighborly feel. "When I was growing up, everybody knew everybody," says Donna Miller, secretary at Montgomery Water and Sewer Authority and lifelong resident. "Now we have more people in and out. But even if we don't know someone, if they need help, we all step up and rally around that."

Old-school dining on Main Street
Main Street has a few restaurants. One favorite is the Station House, an old-school spot for breakfast and lunch. "The Station House is a staple," Miller says. "You have your old men drinking coffee in there every morning." Also near Main Street are the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Station, the Montgomery Police Station and First United Methodist Church. Lewisburg has a Walmart about 14 miles south of Montgomery, and Muncy has Weis Markets about 7 miles east.

Fourth of July fireworks and a library on Main Street
Montgomery's biggest event each year is its Fourth of July celebration with fireworks at the community park. Miller says the nearby Eagle Grange organization, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in Montgomery in 2023, also hosts fundraisers and dinners that bring people out.
Montgomery Area Public Library is located on Main Street in what used to be the First National Bank Building. The library's exterior and interior designs reflect the building's previous use, even including an original vaulted door patrons can walk through. Miller says the library hosts children's activities such as story times and crafting events, and the facility is launching adult programs such as knitting and crocheting classes.

Camping and fishing on the West Branch Susquehanna River
The West Branch Susquehanna River is the borough's southern border and a popular recreation spot. Montgomery Park is on the riverbank and has a playground, soccer fields and baseball diamonds. Visitors can also drop down their kayaks or throw out a fishing line at the water access. Adjacent to the park is Riverside Campground. Vacationers can hook up their RV or stay in one of the A-frame cabins on the site.

Homes and rental properties from the early 1900s
Spacious traditional homes, Colonial Revivals and American Foursquares built in the early 1900s line Montgomery's loosely gridded streets. Prices range from about $60,000 for homes needing significant repairs to over $300,000 for well-kept properties. The borough also has multi- and single-family homes and duplexes for renters. Many homes sit on steep hills, overlooking the houses and terrain below. Properties tend to have gravel driveways for parking and simple landscaping like shrubs lining the front of the house. The river puts some properties in the southern portion of the borough at risk for flooding.

Montgomery Area School District serves students
Students typically attend Montgomery Elementary School for kindergarten through sixth grade and Montgomery Junior/Senior High School for seventh through 12th. The schools earn B and B-minus grades from Niche, respectively. Local students also have a virtual schooling option that follows the same curriculum as the in-person classrooms. Students enrolled in the online program can still participate in athletics and extracurricular activities in person. The borough has plans for a new junior/senior school building on the grounds of the Montgomery Area Athletic & Community Center, though construction had not begun as of fall 2024.
Two prisons and hospitals are major employers
Montgomery is largely car-dependent, though some residents can walk to businesses and organizations around Main Street. Williamsport Regional Airport is 14 miles north. Drivers can get to Williamsport by connecting with U.S. Route 15 from Pennsylvania Route 54.
United States Penitentiary Allenwood, 5 miles southwest, and the State Correctional Institution, 4 miles east in Muncy, are two major employers for residents. The UPMC Williamsport hospital in Williamsport and Evangelical Community hospital in Lewisburg are also nearby.
Miller says that Montgomery used to attract fracking employees, as the borough had warehouses for trucks and other equipment used for drawing out oil from wells in nearby Hughesville and surrounding townships. However, these operations have since left.
