Baseball history and downtown activity join in Marsh Field
Named for a century-old baseball field on which greats of the game once played, Marsh Field has both historic charm and modern appeal. “This is a re-emerging area,” says Eric Shedd, a Realtor with Nexus Realty Muskegon. “There’s activity and recreation here; it’s close to both the beach and downtown events.” Alongside verdant parks and well-kept centennial homes, Marsh Field residents enjoy a convenient location with direct access to downtown Muskegon.

Historic homes come at lower prices than other areas of Muskegon
Marsh Field houses come in a variety of styles, but ranches, cottages, bungalows and Colonial Revivals are most common. Houses are set on neat lawns and shaded by established trees. Sidewalks are common throughout the neighborhood. Although the neighborhood offers plenty of older homes, not all are in prime condition, which is reflected in the area’s average housing prices. Most houses are priced between $75,000 and $150,000; lower than Muskegon City’s average sale price of $190,000. “Marsh Field is popular with first-time home buyers who might have been priced out of Lakeside,” says Shedd, referring to a waterfront neighborhood to the west of Marsh Field.

Marsh Field is a piece of baseball history
Arguably, the biggest draw to this neighborhood is its eponymous baseball diamond, standing since 1915, and adjacent. Encompassing a city block on East Laketon Avenue, Marsh Field played host to women's league teams, major-league farm teams and Negro League teams throughout its history. Among the greats who played at Marsh Field: Satchel Paige, Elston Howard, Mel Ott and others. “Marsh Field has been here for over a century,” says Shedd. “Families come on weekends to enjoy the outdoors and watch their kids play.” The fenced-in playground and tree-shaded picnic area sit behind third base. There’s also a large walking path encircling the diamond and a large, attached parking lot. “The city and local organizers have invested a ton into Marsh Field,” says David Medendorp, a Realtor with Medendorp Real Estate Group. “It was a great spot already, but now it’s the nicest baseball field and park in the surrounding 40 miles. It’s a well-known field that people from all over the country have memories of.” Marsh Field remains in regular use by city leagues, collegiate-level developmental leagues and others.
