New Garden Township is a rural escape close to attractions
New Garden Township neighbors Kennett Square, which some call the mushroom capital of the world. However, the township is where much of the region’s mushroom farming occurs. This community of about 11,000 people is in southern Chester County, an area where gently rolling farmland surrounds several small townships and boroughs. Although New Garden Township offers a cushion from the busier parts of the Philadelphia metro area, many here still live within minutes of attractions. James Wagner, a Realtor with Keller Williams in West Chester, says the area's countryside and proximity to amenities in nearby communities are appealing. “Kennett Square and Avondale are just fantastic towns,” he says. “They’re attractive and have great restaurants and great culture.”

Housing includes upscale Colonial Revivals and New Traditionals
The township is divided into several smaller neighborhoods, where many homes line winding roads with no sidewalks. While there are a few dense neighborhoods, prospective buyers will find several lots up to an acre and a half. The township’s housing includes upscale Colonial Revivals and New Traditionals, ranch-style homes and some American Foursquares. Costs can go from $280,000 for a 1,800-square-foot home to $600,000 for one about 4,600 square feet. Costs can then run between $620,000 for a home over 3,000 square feet to $980,000 for a slightly larger one on more than half an acre. A few even larger homes go for over $1 million. There are a couple of townhouse communities where prices range from about $430,000 to $590,000. New Garden Township has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

Dining options include seafood, pizzas and boutique ice creams
A smattering of pizza parlors, wineries and authentic Mexican restaurants are available in the community. Liliana’s Pizza & Grill is a casual spot serving warm pies, Philly cheesesteaks and Italian comfort foods. Va La Vineyards offers visitors local wines and views of its scenic farmstead. Nearby Kennett Square offers several more dining options, and Wagner singles out places like La Michoacana Homemade Ice Cream. “It’s a fantastic boutique ice cream shop that makes probably 50 different flavors, half of which you’ve probably never heard of,” he says. “There are a number of fine restaurants on State Street in Kennett Square. You can probably walk to five to 10 different restaurants.” Residents shop at the New Garden Center, where chains include a Giant grocery store.
