Suburban, relatively affordable living in Fairmount Park
Fairmount Park lies east of the Lafayette River, sandwiched between two major roads: Tidewater Drive and Chesapeake Boulevard. The neighborhood is primarily comprised of homes, with only a few restaurants and shops. The suburban composition of Fairmount Park makes it a car-dependent area, as most large grocery and department stores lie a short commute from the residential streets. Residents often come for the neighborhood’s affordability compared to other communities in Norfolk. “This is an area growing in value,” says Craig Boyer, a Realtor and investment agent for All/Pros Realty Inc. for over 15 years in the Tidewater region. “It’s a good investment opportunity.” The neighborhood has an active civic league, in which members work to optimize the safety, cleanliness and atmosphere of the area. The city has put forth revitalization plans, improving water lines and rebuilding streets. Locals can enjoy the quiet, residential lifestyle and close community feel in Fairmount Park, about 3miles from downtown Norfolk.
Diverse home styles and sizes in Fairmount Park
The neighborhood is mostly made up of small 1950s bungalows, ranch styles and Cape Cods, often selling in the $200,000 range. Larger traditional-style architecture gained popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s, typically starting around $300,000. These homes tend to feature gabled roofs with symmetrical windows, and they usually house three to four bedrooms. Sidewalks throughout Fairmount Park are shaded by Norfolk’s signature crape myrtle trees, draped over the many front lawns in the area. Driveways are common as well, although street parking is often required for households with more than one vehicle.

Primary students can attend Willard Model Elementary School, which rates a C on Niche and then head to Norview Middle, which scores a C-minus. Maury High School earns a B-plus and offers diverse extracurricular opportunities and sports teams. Students may participate in various clubs including drama, band, anime and chess. Some of the many sports programs include field hockey, football, basketball and volleyball.
Gathering at Shoop
Shoop Park, at the southern end of Fairmount Park, is regarded by locals as the neighborhood’s best feature. The 5-acre, fully fenced park offers amenities including a colorful playground with multiple climbing structures, a splash pad and water play area and athletic facilities. Shoop Park offers a field, basketball hoops and bocce ball courts. Shaded picnic shelters and park benches are spaced along the paved trail around the park’s perimeter, along with exercise stations. About 2 miles east is the Virginia Zoo, an attraction home to over 150 different species.

The neighborhood is about 4 miles from the Norfolk International Airport, and the Hampton Roads Transit system provides public bus services throughout the area. “This area offers more public transportation than other parts of Norfolk, and traffic is relatively moderate,” Boyer concludes. Residents are about 5 miles to the closest civilian health center, Sentara Leigh Hospital.
