A homestead for OU grads and long-time locals
On the banks of the Canadian River, Adkins Crossing derives its name from the ferry service established there in the late 19th century by Pryor Adkins, an industrious entrepreneur and the founder of Norman, Oklahoma. His ferry was long ago swept away by more modern means of river crossing, but Adkins Crossing is still a place known for its access. "Its convenient location within walking distance to OU is a big draw to the area," says Lynne Siano, branch broker with Metro Brokers of OK Siano & Co. "A lot of people buy second homes so they're close to campus and all the sports and activities offered there." The University of Oklahoma joined the SEC in July 2024, and locals are buzzing. “It’s a very exciting time,” says Erin Yarbrough, an OU graduate, Norman resident and director of marketing for Ideal Homes. “I graduated from OU, my husband graduated from OU, and half our office graduated from OU. A lot of people stay after graduating because the area has this perfect mix of feeling small but easy access to world-class resources.”
Traditional and ranch-style homes under $500,000
"There's a pride of ownership reflected in the maintenance of homes in the area," Siano says. The neighborhood has a mix of housing styles, including condos, duplexes and single-family homes built from the early 1980s through the 2000s. Single-family homes tend to be brick traditional or ranch styles with two-car garages. Two- and three-bedroom homes can range from $250,000 to $435,000, while four or more bedrooms can cost between $400,000 and $500,000. Condos with two or three bedrooms can range from $230,000 to $350,000.
A history of philanthropy at Norman High School
Kids can start at McKinley Elementary, which receives an A from Niche, followed by grades 6-8 at Alcott Middle, which earns an A-minus. Norman High School receives an A and has a college and career center that can connect students with university partnerships, internships, job shadowing programs and dual-enrollment classes. Teens can give back to their community through Tigerpalooza, the high school’s annual student-led philanthropy season that raises funds for community organizations in need. During the 2023 season, students raised more than $85,000.
Go Sooners
The University of Oklahoma Sooners have won 50 conference titles in football — the most in the nation. Residents of Adkins Crossing can head to Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, a 10-minute drive barring any traffic. For fresh-air fun with the kids, families can go to Adkins Crossing Park, where there's a playground, a skate park and a soccer field to enjoy. Nature lovers appreciate proximity to the Oliver Wildlife Preserve, a 70-acre woodland managed by OU's Oklahoma Biological Survey. Though the preserve is primarily used for research rather than recreation, visitors are welcome to walk the designated nature trail loop by themselves or with an OU biologist or student as a guide. Those who prefer birdies on the back nine can swing over to The Trails Golf Club of Norman, a membership club with an 18-hole course, a pool and dining facilities. Sandwiched between the golf club and the nature preserve, Canadian Trails Park has a playground, a paved walking trail and open green space. The nearby Canadian River is also a popular destination for kayaking, fishing and birdwatching on the riverbank.
Candle-light dinners at Legend’s
The neighborhood is close to locally owned, award-winning Ray's BBQ on nearby West Lindsey Street, which specializes in juicy brisket and succulent ribs. For a date night or other special occasion, Legend's is a 54-year-old dining tradition that features upscale surf and turf dishes amid an ambiance of candlelight and live piano music. "Legend's is wonderful," Siano says. "It's been there forever." Sooner Mall is less than 3 miles north on Interstate 35 and has more than 65 department and name-brand stores. Grocery stores like Aldi and Walmart are a short 3-mile drive east on State Highway 9.
Close to State Highway 9 and I-35
Adkins Crossing is about 22 miles south of Oklahoma City, making the neighborhood a popular bedroom community for city commuters. State Highway 9 connects travelers to the University of Oklahoma and Interstate 35, a major north-south thoroughfare for the area. While there's no direct public transportation in the neighborhood, there are several bus stops on West Lindsey Street about 1 mile north. Will Rogers World Airport is 23 miles north of the community. Norman Regional Nine is the closest hospital, about 5 miles away.
