Midtown sitting in the middle of everything in North Chicago
In Midtown, residents live in the middle of everything, with Lake Michigan just to the east, the Great Lakes Naval Station to the south and downtown Waukegan to the north. The neighborhood attracts a lot of military families who want to live close to their job or training center. When the base closed some of its housing communities, more military families looked for homes in North Chicago, says Lynnette Banner, a local broker with New Beginnings Realty. With North Chicago’s little beach just across Sheridan Road, Midtown residents can stay close to the water for work and recreation.

Nationals and bungalows along one-way streets
Nationals and bungalows line Midtown’s one-way streets, with sparse trees and minimal landscaping creating an open feel. Trees are planted at regular intervals in the ample space between the curb and the sidewalks along Park Avenue. “Real estate prices are very high right now, but North Chicago’s is low in comparison to other areas that are nearby,” Banner says. Homes here typically sell for between $150,000 and $300,000.

Studying STEM at North Chicago's middle school
Midtown students begin at Evelyn Alexander Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade. A.J. Katzenmeier Elementary serves fourth and fifth graders. Both schools receive C-minus rankings from Niche. In 2019, biopharmaceutical company AbbVie donated $40 million to rebuild North Chicago’s middle school, and Neal Math and Science Academy opened in 2022. The middle school focuses on STEM studies and redesigned study spaces to offer areas where students can work independently or together. It also earns a C-minus. North Chicago Community High School receives a C.
Taking the Metra to Waukegan or downtown Chicago
Sheridan Road runs along the eastern side of the neighborhood, linking residents with the naval base and downtown Waukegan, about 2.5 miles north. The North Chicago Metra station is just east of this thoroughfare and less than a mile from Midtown. Metra connects residents with Waukegan and downtown Chicago, 39 miles away. Only 4 miles north, Waukegan’s Vista Medical Center – East is the closest hospital to Midtown, although military personnel can also go to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, 2.5 miles south. Residents can catch flights at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 31 miles from Midtown.

Midtown's access to Lake Michigan at Foss Park
While Midtown lacks a park, Boak Park on the other side of Glenn Drive has a playground. The park also offers access to the Robert McClory Bike Path, which stretches for 25.5 miles across Lake County to the Wisconsin border. Just across Sheridan Road is what Banner describes as North Chicago’s access point to Lake Michigan—Foss Park. Its beach is a small stretch of sand and an outcropping of rocks where people can swim or just walk along the shoreline. Foss also has a skatepark and grassy areas for picnics under the trees.
With the scenic shores of Lake Michigan nearby, Midtown has something for everyone.

It’s open 24 hours, so people can stop in anytime for pancakes, eggs, burgers or sandwiches. Walmart is about 4 miles away in Waukegan. Target and Heinen’s Grocery Store are 5.5 miles south in Lake Bluff. Members of the military can get groceries at the Great Lakes Commissary, about 3 miles from Midtown.

Celebrating North Chicago every August
For a weekend each August, North Chicago comes together at Foss Park for Community Days. Local artists perform at the bandshell, and a parade goes through the city. There’s also a family movie night in the park in the evening. Up in Waukegan, Scoop the Loop shows off the city’s antique cars on Sheridan Road. The tradition started in the 1950s and '60s, with residents just showing off their cars, and today includes live music and food vendors.
Market Square Car Show is a great way to connect with the community's car enthusiasts.
The 2024 Lake Bluff Farmer's Market runs on Friday mornings from June 7 through October 11.
