North Hanover honors its agricultural roots in Burlington County
North Hanover is an agricultural township in Burlington County, which boasts more acres of protected farmland than any other county in the state. The township embraces New Jersey’s nickname of the Garden State, as a drive down its two-lane roads leads past acres of rolling farmland, verdant pastures and roadside stands filled with fresh produce and homemade goods. “It’s farms, agriculture and open space for the most part,” says Frank Angelucci, a Realtor with ERA Central Realty Group with nearly 20 years of experience in the industry. While residents enjoy a slower pace of life in New Hanover, they’re centrally located within 20 miles of Trenton and can drive to nearby shops and restaurants that are otherwise outside of their daily orbit. The township is also just north of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which is home to McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix Army Base and Lakehurst Naval Air Station, making it the Department of Defense’s only tri-service joint base.

From traditional homes to country estates, prices range widely
The township has a range of housing styles and options. Residential areas near the center of town offer more of a neighborhood feel and feature Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes with smaller lots, usually less than an acre. Farther from the main thoroughfares, split-level homes and custom builds are tucked into the countryside and have up to several acres of land. Single-family homes typically sell for $350,000 to $630,000, although those with significant acreage can fetch anywhere from $750,000 to $1.2 million. New Hanover also has a handful of mobile home communities, where prices generally range from $50,000 to $120,000. In addition to its scenic surroundings, North Hanover has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Residents can also celebrate the changing seasons at spots like Robson’s Farm, where they can pick peaches in the summer and explore apple orchards throughout the fall. Three Miracles Farm is another local favorite, and their annual Kids Day on the Farm invites people to interact with alpacas, goats and more.
The township has a few shops, with more options in nearby Hamilton
North Hanover has several farmstands and roadside shops. The shelves at Byrne’s Farm Market are stocked with a rotating selection of fruits, vegetables and jarred goods. At Durr’s Blue Box Produce & Flowers, residents can pick their own flowers or pumpkins, depending on the season. For the essentials, there’s Dollar General. Oak & Ember Grill is the township’s only restaurant, and it serves as a local hangout known for its American classics and wood-paneled dining room.

Dining options range from fast-food chains such as Chick-fil-A to local favorites like Raza’s at Hamilton, where the upscale menu brings a touch of European influence to American favorites with dishes ranging from pork chops served with Roman gnocchi to chicken Milanese.

Highways connect residents to Philadelphia, NYC and the Jersey Shore
North Hanover is a primarily car-dependent area. While no major thoroughfares pass through the township, residents are about a 10-mile drive from the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 195. The turnpike offers a direct route to bigger cities like Philadelphia, about 45 miles away, and New York City, just over 70 miles from North Hanover. Commuters are also 20 miles from NJ Transit’s Hamilton Station, where the train connects passengers to New York’s Penn Station in around 90 minutes. “I did both when I worked up north, but it’s usually easier to just hop on the turnpike,” Angelucci says. For those heading to the Jersey Shore, I-195 leads 30 miles east to coastal destinations like Asbury Park. Trenton-Mercer Airport is about 22 miles away. The closest hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, is less than 15 miles from the township.
