Rooted in an industrial history, the small village of Taftville offers a humble suburban feel.
Quiet Norwich village with an industrial past
Rooted in an industrial history, the small village of Taftville offers a humble suburban feel just 4 miles north of Norwich. In 1866, construction began on the Taftville Mill, which became one of the nation’s largest mills. The cotton mill quickly established Taftville as an industrial hub in eastern Connecticut and attracted Civil War veterans and Irish immigrants to work at the factory. As employees flocked to Taftville, the mill owners were forced to create additional housing – and a community started to form. With its 19th-century architecture intact, Taftville was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Today, the quiet neighborhood attracts residents for its proximity to modern amenities and recreation. “Taftville is conveniently located to Norwich, and you have shopping within minutes,” says local broker Lisa Neundorf, owner of Castles, Condos & Cottages. Though much of the neighborhood has developed over the years, Taftville’s history still weaves through its community and is reflected in its residential homes and architecture. The cotton mill has since been converted into an apartment complex, but it still stands as a testament to the textile giants who crafted Taftville’s legacy.

Traditional homes reflect 19th- and 20th-century architecture
Homes in Taftville’s village center feature a mix of traditional styles, ranging from small bungalows and ranch homes to colonial-influenced two-family residences. Many were built during the back end of the 19th century and into the 20th century, reflecting the architectural styles popular during that era. Colonial influences are prominent in the humble ranch and two-story homes that mingle between Cape Cods. While residences in manufactured home communities typically list between $50,000 and $150,000, single-family homes may range from $125,000 to upwards of $480,000. Those looking for a two-family home should expect to pay between $140,000 and $330,000.

Both schools receive a C grade from Niche. Kelly STEAM Magnet Middle School serves sixth through eighth graders and gets a C-minus score. From there, students can choose from an array of local high schools to attend, including the B-rated Norwich Technical High School or Norwich Free Academy. The private high school maintains a B-plus rating and teaches a diverse student body, representing over 40 countries.
Mohegan Park is a beautiful hidden gem in Norwich.
Natural settings and riverside activities in Taftville
Just south of Taftville, Mohegan Park stretches across over 380 acres, offering a recreational respite to residents in the Norwich area. The verdant tract features a blooming memorial rose garden, a disc golf course, a playground and walking trails that loop around Spaulding Pond. The 14-acre body of water is rife with catfish, trout and bass, attracting local anglers to set up along the pond’s banks.
Although there are no access points to the Shetucket River from Taftville, residents may head north to Occum’s McKeon Park to launch their boats or paddle the Shetucket River Water Trail, which starts in Windham. “The marina in Downtown Norwich also gives residents water access to the Thames,” Neundorf says. “And the shoreline is only 25 minutes away.” Coastal parks along the Long Island Sound include Bluff Point Beach in Groton and Waterford Beach Park. Located behind the Taftville Volunteer Fire Department on Providence Street, the Taftville Tennis Courts and Playground offer paved courts and open space for fun and free play. Further west, the grassy athletic fields and sandy baseball diamonds of Raymond Oullette Park oversee the Taftville Reservoir.

In-town mainstays and nearby shopping in Norwich and Lisbon
Taftville has its own post office and a few local establishments in its village center. Residents can pick up their prescriptions at Nutmeg Pharmacy Taftville before browsing thrift finds at Maria’s Treasures or ordering a classic pie at Taftville Pizza. Stores like Stop & Shop are located at the Norwichtown Commons 3 miles south. Neundorf says many people head to supermarkets and stores at the Lisbon Landing, a shopping center that includes Walmart and Target. “And Downtown Norwich is only a few minutes away,” she adds. “There’s a lot of shopping and dining in the downtown district.”
Taftville sits between two major casinos with Foxwoods Casino being one of them.
Proximity to two local resorts
Two major entertainment destinations sit within 12 miles of Taftville, which Neundorf says is another draw for Taftville residents. The Mohegan Sun in Montville is an expansive casino and arena that attracts swaths of visitors to its events, culinary outposts, gift shops and specialty stores, and its year-round events. The arena hosts musical performances, with recent names including Greta Van Fleet and Dierks Bentley, and The Cabaret Theatre’s 400 seats fill nightly for performing arts showcases such as plays and dances. Foxwoods Resort Casino is in Mashantucket, 11 miles from Taftville. The grounds are home to the water rides of the Great Wolf Lodge, the performing arts center at Great Cedar Showroom, and the Tanger Outlets, which include brands like Levi’s and Nike. A collection of diverse eateries is also scattered throughout the outlets and casino.
Taftville
Access to Interstate 395 and Providence, Rhode Island
Easy highway access to Interstate 395 is another selling point for Taftville residents, Neundorf says. The neighborhood sits just south of the interstate, which connects to U.S. Route 6 and Providence, Rhode Island. Bus stops strewn throughout the village link commuters to Downtown Norwich. For further travel, the Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is a 42-mile drive east.
