Residential neighborhood next to major throughfare

Edgemere is a residential neighborhood just off U.S. Route 385 in Odessa. “We locally refer to it as 'Andrews Highway' because we have a lot of commuters that either live in Andrews and work in Odessa, or vice versa,” says Randy Ham, executive director of Odessa Arts, who lives nearby. Andrews is about 33 miles away. The highway intersects University Boulevard, another major road. “Any part of Odessa is accessible from the neighborhood because of those two arteries that run north, south, east and west,” Ham says. Residents can hop on the highway and get to Downtown Odessa in 2 miles, where they can attend First Friday ODTX or get dinner at one of many restaurants.

Odessa has a buyer’s market

The wide streets of Edgemere are lined with narrow sidewalks. Oak trees dot the grassy lawns, many of which are fenced in. Driveways lead to a one-car garage or carport, although there is some street parking. The neighborhood is almost exclusively brick, stucco and hardboard siding ranch styles built around the 1950s. Prices for a single-family home can range from $115,000 to $175,000. Odessa is more of a buyer’s market. “There’s just so many homes on the market right now, and they’re not moving as fast,” says Realtor Justin Howsey with Turnkey Real Estate, who has lived in the city for most of his life. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, parts of Edgemere are in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Because Odessa participates in the National Flood Insurance Program and its Community Rating System, residents are eligible for a 10% discount on flood insurance.

Restaurants along Andrews Highway

Restaurants line Andrews Highway. Howsey recommends the Legendary Barn Door Steakhouse, which serves Texas classics like chicken fried steak, and Garibaldy’s Tacos, a Mexican restaurant that he calls “pretty authentic.” Traveling about 2 miles to Downtown Odessa offers more options, although some are willing to travel even farther. “There is a restaurant in Andrews that is so famous for its steak fingers,” says Ham, referring to Buddy’s Drive-In, about 32 miles away. “It’s a nice, less than a day trip.” The closest grocery store is Lowe’s Market. Music City Mall is about 3 miles away, with major retailers like JCPenney. Walmart, Target and Home Depot are all near the mall.

Community comes alive for First Friday ODTX

Downtown Odessa transforms for First Friday ODTX, a monthly event hosted by Odessa Arts and Downtown Odessa. The entire community gets involved. Local eateries and shops stay open late, often running activities and specials that change each month. In the past, the Ector County Library sponsored pet-rock painting, and M-Elemental Therapeutics provided free five-minute massages. At the Ector County Coliseum, an event venue about 1 mile away, folks can attend concerts, rodeos and football games. The venue’s largest event is the biannual Permian Basin International Oil Show, where oil and gas industry leaders can network and learn about the latest technology.

Permian Panthers play on famous football field

Edgemere is part of the Ector County Independent School District. Sam Houston Elementary School and Wilson & Young Medal of Honor Middle School both receive a C from Niche. Permian High School earns a C-plus. The Permian Panthers play at Ratliff Stadium, where “Friday Night Lights” was filmed. Odessa College is nearby, offering over 120 certificate and associate degree programs. “Odessa College is such a hub for that side of town because you have the sports center and the teams,” Ham says. “It has a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe on campus.” Odessa Arts partners with the college every year for the Odessa Shakespeare Festival, which features shows and an acting workshop. Throughout the rest of the year, the college holds open auditions for plays and musicals.

Andrews Highway provides a quick commute

The neighborhood is car-dependent, with Andrews Highway acting as the western border. “Andrews Highway is a very nice little commuter corridor to get access to Downtown,” Ham says. “It’s less than a 10-minute drive.” Midland Odessa Urban Transit District, better known as EZ-Rider, has a bus route along the highway that stops at Odessa College. Most residents fly out of Midland International Air & Space Port, about 15 miles away. Both Odessa Regional Medical Center and Medical Center Hospital have an emergency room about 2 miles away.
