Summer pool party to winter lights display
Odessa hosts events throughout the year, although many Hillside residents look forward to one in particular. The Sherwood Aquatic Center hosts an annual pool party each summer, where attendees can play yard games and enter giveaways while splashing around the pool. During the holiday season, cars drive through Starbright Village, a lights display at McKinney Park. The Ector County Coliseum is an event venue about 1 mile outside the neighborhood that presents rodeos, concerts and hockey games. Wilson & Young Middle School in Hillside
Hillside is part of the Ector County Independent School District. Goliad Elementary School and Wilson & Young Medal of Honor Middle School both receive a C from Niche. Permian High School earns a C-plus and is known for its football team, the Permian Panthers. The Panthers have made it to the playoffs every year since 2011 and have won six state championships since the school opened. Odessa College is a community college about 2 miles away that partners with local high schools to offer career and technical education programs.

Short drive to Odessa’s largest park
Hillside is less than 1 mile from Sherwood Park, which, at about 57 acres, is the city’s largest park. “A lot of people go there,” Ortega says. “It’s always packed.” This is largely because of the aquatic center, one of two in the city. Families can cool off in the pool and sprayground during the summer. The Sherwood Little League practices on the baseball fields in the spring, which are near the volleyball and tennis courts. There is also a playground and a walking trail. The Ruben Pier Memorial Skate Park is in Sherwood, with ramps inspired by oil pump jacks. The University of Texas Permian Basin is about 4 miles away and is home to the Ellen Noël Art Museum. There are over 200 artists on display at the museum, which also hosts activities like art camp and a book club.

East 42nd Street connects to major roads
Most residents rely on their cars to get around. East 42nd Street connects with State Route 330, which intersects Interstate 20.
