Johnson is 3 miles from downtown Odessa and just south of Floyd Gwin Park. “This is a unique older neighborhood,” says Yvonne Rosas, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “It’s near downtown and close to the medical district.” This provides easier access to medical attention and job opportunities at the facilities. The neighborhood is bordered to the north by Floyd Gwin Park, which has a pool and other amenities. Johnson’s proximity to restaurants, the 3.2-mile Comanche Trail and Interstate 20 also add to its appeal.

Ranch-style and newer-build contemporary homes
Along Johnson's streets are older ranch-style homes with brick facades, contemporary newer builds with stucco facades and mobile homes. These homes have sold for between the low $100,000s for a mobile home to $360,000 for a contemporary build. “There are some good buys here for investors,” Rosas says. Some homes have one-to-two-car garages, while others have carports. Small trees and fences in front yards are common. Streets in Johnson are wide enough for street parking and the neighborhood is very walkable. As for crime, the neighborhood received a CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10 from the CAP Index, slightly higher than the national average.

Crosstown football rivalry between Odessa High and Permian High
Students in Johnson are assigned to attend schools within the Ector County Independent School District. Starting in Pre-K, students may attend Cameron Dual Language Elementary, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. In sixth grade, students head to C-graded Bowie Middle School. From there, students move on to Odessa High, which earns a C-plus from Niche. Odessa High is known for its crosstown football rivalry with Permian High. Both teams play at Odessa’s Ratliff Stadium. As for private school options, St. John’s Episcopal School serves Pre-K through eighth grade and is less than 1 mile from the neighborhood. Niche has not yet graded the school.

Johnson sits about 2 miles from the on-ramp to Interstate 20, providing direct access to the Midland International Air & Space Port, 14 miles away and Midland, 25 miles away. Downtown Odessa is a 3-mile drive away. Residents of Johnson can take advantage of the Midland Odessa Urban Transit District bus system, otherwise known as the EZ-Rider, from the stop at Floyd Gwin Park, 1 mile away. The nearest hospital is the Medical Center Hospital, 2 miles away.
Fishing at the Comanche Trail Park Lake
Floyd Gwin Park borders Johnson to the north and offers a variety of activities for both adults and children. The park is undergoing renovations and features a playground and courts for basketball, tennis and pickleball. Across Park Boulevard, the park also has a plethora of soccer fields. North of Floyd Gwin Park is San Jacinto Park and Western Manor Park. Both parks have a playground, ample green space and a walking path. Runners and bikers enjoy the 2.2-mile loop from the Comanche Trail Park West to the Comanche Trail pond, where visitors can fish.

DoughBoy’s Café offers pastries, donuts and coffee right off 10th Street near Floyd Gwin Park. Just across Harless Avenue from Johnson, Mario’s Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar serves hibachi and sushi on well-crafted plates. Jalisco’s To Go sells Mexican food in a drive-thru fashion. Jalisco’s also serves a variety of cocktails. Odessa’s Music City Mall, anchored by stores like JCPenney and At Home, is a 7-mile drive from the neighborhood. There is a Walmart Supercenter 2 miles north of Johnson for groceries and everyday essentials.

The Permian Basin Fair & Expo at the Ector County Coliseum
Odessa’s Ector County Coliseum is 4 miles northeast of Johnson and hosts various events throughout the year. Every year around Labor Day, the coliseum hosts the Permian Basin Fair & Expo, which attracts people from all over for its live music, carnival and petting zoo. In addition to food vendors, the event also features competitions like a food-eating contest and a scavenger hunt.
Ratliff Ranch Golf Links 9 miles away
Golfers in Johnson can make the 9-mile drive to Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, which has an 18-hole course and a Linx Bar & Grill. They can enjoy a meal here before or after a round. The course also hosts tournaments and events throughout the year.
