Normandy is a residential area near Odessa College

Although the Normandy community in Odessa is primarily residential, locals are close to schools and commercial arteries. "Normandy is near major roadways and busy streets...There are multiple parks that are close," says Cynthia Barker, a West Texas resident and a Realtor with LocalPro Realty. She adds that residents are about five minutes from Odessa College. The homes here typically sell for less than in other communities around the metro area. Some children can walk to a highly rated public school located inside the neighborhood.

The housing market has ranch-style homes and bungalows

Alongside Normandy's paved roads are single-story homes and sidewalks. Behind many houses are walkable alleyways made of clay and gravel. Buyers will find ranch-style dwellings and bungalows dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. The community has several homes in need of renovation that have attracted investors. Some of the residences include upgrades such as remodeled kitchens, new roofs or replaced sewer lines. Home prices typically range from about $50,000 to $230,000. The area has some risk of flooding, especially west of Adams Avenue. The city is prone to severe weather, such as tropical storms and sandstorms. Tornadoes can also be a threat in this part of Texas.

Ector County schools of choice and local football rivalries

Ector County Independent School District offers several choice schools to families who wish to send their children to out-of-zone locations. Gale Pond Alamo Elementary is a school of choice option located in the neighborhood; the school has a B grade on Niche. Students can also attend the nearby Burnet Elementary, which has a C. Bonham Middle receives a C-minus, and Permian High has a C. During football season, locals gather at the Ratliff Stadium, which was featured in the film Friday Night Lights. "There is a ton of rivalry between Odessa High and Permian High, Midland High and Midland Lee. Those games can get pretty busy," Barker says. Some teens may graduate and enroll in Odessa College, which stands a few blocks away. The University of Texas Permian Basin is about 4 miles from Normandy.

Within a few miles of parks and the YMCA

Although Normandy doesn't have neighborhood parks, locals are near recreational destinations. "You've got Freedom Park, Jim Parker Park, Dan Hemphill Park and Purple Sage Park," Barker says. "The YMCA is also really close, it's about a mile down the road." Dan Hemphill Park, also known as Central Park, sits a mile away; the outdoor spot has two basketball courts and a small play area. The on-site Boys & Girls Club provides after-school and summer programs. "[The city also] has the Odessa Jackalopes, which is a hockey team," Barker says. The team's home base, Ector County Coliseum, is about 2 miles away. The arena also hosts bull riding competitions, concerts and other live events.

U.S 385, Live Oak Plaza and Music City Mall offer retail

Businesses are dotted along nearby U.S. 385, which is known as Andrews Highway. Here, locals will find shops and national storefronts, such as DG Market. Odessa's Catholic Charities organization operates a local thrift store and food pantry along the highway. The Legendary Barn Door Steakhouse and Ajuua's Mexican Restaurant are popular dining options. Lowe's Market sells groceries and home goods a few blocks to the south. Traveling about 2 miles brings shoppers to Live Oak Plaza and other retail centers on 8th Street. Music City Mall, a premier shopping destination in Odessa, stands 3 miles from the neighborhood.

Medical Center Hospital, Interstate 20 and the airport are nearby

The neighborhood contains several local houses of worship, including St. Mary's Catholic Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church. Public bus routes run along University Boulevard and U.S. Highway 385. Medical Center Hospital provides general and emergency care services about 3 miles from Normandy. Drivers can reach Interstate 20 and downtown in roughly 5 miles. Midland International Air and Space Port is a 12-mile drive from most homes.
