Small Oklahoma City neighborhood near Will Rogers Park
The conveniences of city living are combined with easy access to nature in Lyons Park. This small western Oklahoma City neighborhood rests just south of where Interstate 44 and Route 66 meet. “The whole area is really for people who enjoy being outdoors,” says Carla Splaingard, a Realtor with Re/Max Preferred. Residents here make use of being only a few blocks from the expansive Will Rogers Park, offering plenty of outdoor activities on its 30 acres. “The lots tend to be a little bigger. There are also lots of trees here, which really adds to the rural feel,” says Splaingard, who’s a lifelong resident of OKC. With a commercial corridor along the neighborhood’s perimeter, residents have all the essentials close by.
Minimal Traditional cottages and ranch-style homes
Homebuyers will find mainly Minimal Traditional cottages and ranch-style homes throughout the neat grid-patterned residential streets here. Many homes were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s and rest on medium-sized lots individually landscaped. “They’re really starter homes, but it’s a very stable neighborhood. Not much has been listed and sold even in the last two or three years,” Splaingard says. When homes are listed, they typically stay on the market for less than a month. Prices range from $100,000 to $300,000 with most buyers paying $150,000 on average over the last year. It’s worth noting home prices here are about $90,000 less than the Oklahoma City average.
Shopping and dining on May Avenue and Route 66
Restaurants and shops, national and local, circle the neighborhood. From American fare to international cuisine, there’s a lot to choose from. People from across OKC rave about the burgers at Patty Wagon, and it’s the authentic Guatemalan flavors at La Criolla that keep people coming back for more. OKC’s Asian District, home to the best Asian fusion and Vietnamese cuisine in the city, is just over 2 miles away. A few bars and clubs nearby offer nightlife, including The Secret Bar & Patio, Frankie’s OKC and Club Eden. For groceries, residents can choose from big-box brands like Sam’s Club and WinCo Foods or multicultural grocers such as European Store Oklahoma and Afghan Halal Food Market.
Paid internship program at Northwest Classen High
Lyons Park students can attend Oklahoma City Public Schools. Students can start at Kaiser Elementary School before moving on to Taft Middle School. Both schools earn C-minus grades from Niche. Students can finish their degrees at C-rated Northwest Classen High School, one of two schools in the district with an Academy of Health Sciences. Students in the Academy program are able to participate in paid internships during their third and fourth years. There are several private school options nearby, including Rising High Christian Academy and Rosary Catholic School.
Established city park with an amphitheater
Considered a unique gem in the city, the sprawling Will Rogers Park offers more than your average neighborhood green space. Residents looking to exercise can walk on the meandering paths, play tennis indoors and outside or practice their throws on the disc golf course. Nature lovers spend entire afternoons exploring the historic gardens and conservatory or taking a class to sharpen their gardening skills. Lyons Park youngsters can enjoy the playground and curly slides at the outdoor pool at the Family Aquatics Center. The park is also a place for gathering. It’s common to see longtime friends playing bridge at the community center and the amphitheater fills up for twilight concerts and movies in the summer.
Drive, Walk or Bike around OKC
With Interstate 44, Route 66 and May Avenue all close by, Lyons Park residents have easy access to the rest of Oklahoma City. “You’re only 3 miles from Main Street and about 7 miles from downtown, so there’s tons to do,” Splaingard says. While the area has minimal sidewalks for pedestrians, cyclists can make use of the bike-friendly Drexel Boulevard and the dedicated bike lanes along Grand Boulevard. EMBARK bus stops encompass the neighborhood, lining May Avenue, NW 23rd Street and Portland Avenue. Will Rogers World Airport is about a 9-mile drive south.
Houses of Worship
For newcomers looking for a faith community, they will find more than a dozen options encompassing many faiths, including Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Northwest Baptist Church, non-denominational Evolve Church OKC, Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City, reform synagogue Temple B'nai Israel, Nithyanandeshwara Vedic Temple of Oklahoma Hindu temple and Oklahoma Buddhist Vihara.
