Designed community with parks and highly rated schools
Featherstone gets its name from one of two communities designed by Ideal Homes on the outskirts of Moore, Oklahoma, the other being Native Plains. Residents can work with the organization to create custom homes in a neighborhood that includes its own amenities, including walking trails and playgrounds. “We like to include things like that in all of our communities because we don’t want people to have to leave their neighborhood to enjoy their daily life,” says Tara Graves, marketing coordinator of Ideal Homes. Another benefit of the area is its location, in the Moore Public School district, which Niche gives an A, and only about 5 miles from Old Town Moore. Downtown Oklahoma City is about 12 miles away. Realtor Christy Hawkins with Keller Williams Green Meadow sums it up: “It’s a great, family-friendly neighborhood in a nice location, with good schools, and the prices aren’t overinflated. There are really no negatives to speak of – it pretty much checks all the boxes.” Featherstone receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Custom homes with intentional variety
Sidewalks line the grassy lawns of Featherstone, interrupted by wide driveways that lead to two-car garages. Part of what makes the community unique is the variety of housing. While all homes are based on new traditional styles, that is where most of the similarities end. “We do not want the neighborhoods to look cookie-cutter, so we do not allow the outside of a home to look the same as their neighbor,” Graves says. “We’re constantly trying to jazz up our outsides to look exciting and new.” Many boast Craftsman or Tudor influences, and there is some contemporary architecture. Ideal Homes are also known for being energy efficient. “We are the only homebuilder in Oklahoma who can guarantee the heating and cooling usage on our Ideal Homes,” Graves says. The northern part of the neighborhood is primarily made up of older homes, many with vinyl siding and covered porches. “You can get more for your money for an older home,” Hawkins says. These older properties, built in the early 2000s, can cost $175,000 to $250,000, while houses built after 2015 range from $250,000 to $400,000. Some larger homes, upwards of 2,000 square feet, are priced between $400,000 and $500,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that Featherstone has a relatively high risk of tornadoes. Most standard homeowner’s insurance covers wind and storm damage.
Neighborhood parks with playgrounds and ponds
Both Native Plains and Featherstone have parks built into their communities, and it’s common for neighbors to go between the two. Native Plain’s is slightly larger. “It’s got walking trails throughout, and a really awesome playground,” Graves says. Both have a catch-and-release pond, and there is another playground in Featherstone. There’s also a splash pad where kids can run around and cool off on a hot summer day. Residents who want to travel beyond the neighborhood can visit the nearby Little River Park. This sprawling park spans about 52 acres and has a pirate-themed playground and close to 1 mile of trails. Hawkins says families can also head to Orr Family Farms, which features Easter Egg hunts and Strawberry Fest in the spring and the Fall Festival from September to November. The festival is jam-packed with things to do, including a pumpkin patch, carnival rides and hayrides.
A-rated school district
Moore Public Schools serve Featherstone. “People really love Moore schools,” Hawkins says. “This area attracts a lot of young families because of the school system.” Wayland Bonds Elementary School has kindergarten through sixth grade, while seventh and eighth grade are completed at Southridge Junior High School. Both earn an A. Southmoore High School receives an A-minus and offers vocational classes to its students through the Moore-Norman Technology Center.
Nearby restaurants and shops
Residents of Featherstone can travel into Moore for a bite to eat. The Lazy Donkey is a Mexican restaurant with popular dishes like birria tacos and seasonal margaritas, while Ray's BBQ is known for its barbeque and southern comfort food. At Okie Tonk, friends can grab a drink while enjoying a burger, competing in trivia night, or enjoying live music. There are also some options in southern Oklahoma City, about 5 miles away, including the Italian Spazio Ristorante. There is a bustling shopping center at the intersection of Southers 19th Street and Interstate 35, about 4 miles away. People can find everything from Costco and Sam’s Club to Walmart, Aldi and WinCo Foods. “It’s a one-stop-shop for anything you could need,” Hawkins says. Target and Lowe’s are also in the area.
Residents attend Moore events
The City of Moore hosts several events throughout the year. In the fall, locals can head to Moore Central Park or Kiwanis Park for the Sasquatch Hunt. The city’s friendly Bigfoot hides around the parks, waiting for families to find them. The Christmas Spectacular is only one of the many celebrations during the holiday season. Attendees can listen to carolers and do some gift shopping at the Mini Merry Market. There is also a tree-lighting ceremony, and the night ends with a fireworks show.
Car-dependent near highways
Featherstone is a car-dependent community, although connections to Interstate 44 and Interstate 35 are about 4 miles away. “You’re far enough away from the city center that it’s quiet, and there’s essentially no through traffic, but you’re still close enough that you don’t have to go far for things like groceries or the movies or good restaurants,” Hawkins says. The closest emergency room is about 5 miles away, at INTEGRIS Health Community Hospital – Moore. Most people fly out of Will Rogers World Airport, about 12 miles away.
